Will be sailing a newly purchased boat from City Island, NY to Washington, DC and I need some help and information. The trip will mean motoring south on the East River, through NYC harbor, outbound along the shore of NJ, around Cape May and north to the ICW, then south to Washington. I need any and all information that I can get on such things as procedures, regulations, mooring, eating, what charts are necessary and any general information that I can get. Would like to talk to anyone that has made this trip, or any part of this trip.

Ed: When are you leaving? Do you need crew? I've done parts of that run: from City Island down the river through NY harbor, and from the harbor down the Jersey Shore. Depending on your timetable, I might be available (and would certainly be willing) to sign aboard for some of the trip. Time the canal right with the current in your direction it could be as much a 7knots against you if not but could be that much in your favor. The Sassafrass river is a beautiful anchorage area in rout. come in and about 1/2 mile in you will come around ordinary point you can anchor out there or come all the way in the river to georgetown. The grannary and Kitty knight house are great resteraunts, the anchoring or marine facilities are great and the average depth is 13'. farther south. Worton creek, Baltimore. Annapolis, Chester river, Wye River. Lots to choose from. have fun

Delaware bay
I just finished a 3 week trip from Kent Island, Md to Block Island and back this summer, it was a great vacation. Time the run thru Hell's gate, be there at hight tide (slack). Time your arrival to the entrance of the C&D canal (Reedy Point) at high tide (slack), you want to go with the flood tide at the end of the run (last 6 hours) from Cape May (it takes about 12 hours from Cape May to Cheasapeake city). The Delaware bay can get really bad so I hear, that's why every time I have done it I made sure to time it right, and checked the wind direction and seas. Plan to spend a day or two in Cape May if conditions are not good. The C&D canal ebbs towards the Cheasapeake bay. Cheasapeake city has a great place to anchor and there is a marina across from the canal. If you decide to anchor in the basin watch the entrance, it is shallow in the middle so favor the left side close to the pilings. From the C&D to Washington is straight forward. There are plenty of marinas and anchoring spots (free, no mooring fields) on the way. Get the cruising guide to the Cheasapeake bay, and the Maptech chart kit for the Delaware bay and Cheasapeake bay. If you need more info you can e-mail me direct. Ozana mrkayak2@aol.com

Washington DC is not
on Chesapeake Bay. It's on the Potomac River. If you really mean to go to Washington DC and not some place near to Washington on the Chesapeake then you have to go way down Bay to Point Lookout and then turn north up the winding Potomac. A long trip.

check the notice to mariners
Make sure you check notice to mariners. the Coast Guard will not let you pass on the west side of Roosevelt Island. You must transit the east side and call the lift bridge on channel 13 about 15 minutes before you pass under the bridge to assure it will be open. good luck
