I am very seriously considering buying a H-146. Can any one please tell me what is a reasonable number of average sized adults that will be comfortable and overload the boat? Thank you.

146 capacity

Samuel, Hunter's specs on the 146 list the maximum capacity as 5. To my eyes, that's a calm-water or at-the-dock seating capacity. Hunter's promotional photos of the boat under sail show two adults and one youth aboard. In moderate conditions, two modest-sized adults with two children could probably sail comfortably. For a 14-footer, even one with a relatively wide beam, that's probably the safe limit. Talk to a dealer, and if you haven't already, check out the specs and photos at www.huntermarine.com/models/146/index.html

5?

I can't imagine 5 people on a 14' daysailor. I had 4 on my 18' daysailor once and it was too many. 2 adults and a child was OK, but more than that? Forget it. You wouldn't be able to move or reach control lines.

146 capacity

Samuel, I have (test) sailed the Hunter 146 in sheltered waters up to 15kn of wind with two adults and two 10 year old kids. We enjoyed her a lot and I would think that 4 is a perfect crew size. She feels like she could handle 5 adults but would probably slow down some under sail. The long wide cockpit is certainly large enough for five. Happy shopping!

146 overload

I've had three above average adults (avg 190#'s)and one child (45#'s) sailing comfortably in 4-6 knot winds with no problem. It helps to have a little experience with jib in front when tacking. My best guestimation would be four adults at 180#'s. I am personally more comfortable with 2 experienced adults. I like having the room to move around.
