The rudder and tiller have disapeared. The questions now are 1)Is the assembly at the bottom of the canal. 2) Will they float and have drifted off. 3)thievery? 4)Are used parts available. Really need help on this as new assembly seems expensive yet the parts are so necessary to having a pleasant day on the water. Question 2 is the big debate here. info on this would be helpful to determine how much effort we will put into locating the missing assembly. charley

They float

Charlie My rudder and tiller float (foam core). When I rebuilt my boat, I put steel rods inside the rudder to strenghten it (it still floats) and drilled and filled with epoxy. I also installed heaveyier hardware and drilled a hole in the protruding end of the top (longer) pindle. I then have a locking pin on a teather that I put in it to keep it from comming off. If the rudder is turned hard to either side, it can float up and out of the hardware and come off. Good luck finding it.

You can buy a new one

from Rudy at D&R Marine, but its expensive; I just checked on his website, and he is looking for $715 for a rudder with pintles and a tiller. Its hard to tell from your original post how you lost the rudder, but it seems unlikely that it just floated away. I've been in some pretty rough water with my Oday 23, and the rudder has never just "floated" out of the gudgeons. The previous poster has suggested that the rudder can float out under certain circumstances, but your original post made it seem like you put the boat away one day at the dock or mooring, came back later and the rudder was gone. It seems unlikely that the conditions got so rough in your anchorage (marina?) that the rudder was dislodged. Unless there is more to this story, I suspect foul play. Good luck looking for the thing; in addition to checking the shoreline/marinas in the area, I would also stop by any nearby boatyards and let them know what you are looking for. Perhaps someone has come by recently to see if they would be interested in buying a slightly used rudder.

YEP

THANKS FOR THE REPONSES. YES IT JUST DISAPEARED WHILE DOCKED IN CANAL. ITS SHALLOW ENUFF AT LOW TIDE THAT WE SUSPECT IT MAY HAVE BOUNCED OFF. ITS THE 700 DOLLARS I AM CONCERNED ABOUT. APPRECIATE THE HELP. CHARLEY

One other way

The cheapest way is to find it. That being said at 700 plus dollars you can understand why it might have walked-uh....swam off. You can buy new, or you can make one. If you make one, the supplies will run you roughly $350 to complete the project. Good Luck.

You should call.....

D&R Marine (508 644-3001) and talk to Rudy. He's forgotten more about Oday's than most experts ever knew, and.....he's a great guy. http://www.drmarine.com/

making rudder work

How handy are you, I think with a little ingenuity you could make the rudder work.

Gary

Before you give up.......

you might consider running a wanted ad. There is a "gear for sale/wanted" on this site and a message board here: http://www.odaysailboats.com/LetsTalk.asp You could also post on "sailnet". Who knows, you could stumble across someone who has a parts boat or someone who replaced a slightly damaged rudder which could be fixed. There seems to be more 22's around than 23's. Would the 22 rudder work or be modified to work? You have inspired me to put a tethered pin in mine to avoid this nightmare. Good luck.....Gary

pin in mine

I have the pin in mine. Just drill through the longest pindle.

Now Now Charlie

Be nice, cause maybe if you are nice than Marv might share with the rest of us mere mortals what it's like to walk on water... My sarcastic way of saying I agree, that type of response to someones misfortune is uncalled for in this forum

Hey Charlie...

Was browsing at a local sailers consignment shop and noticed a rudder which is a little shorter than the rudder on my 25 and looks remarkably like an Oday design. The tiller connection looks exactly like mine. The pintels are ~23" apart (but can be moved of course) and it is ~69" tall. He's asking $220 and it seems in pretty good shape. I'm in Pensacola, FL. Not sure where Madeira Beach is. You may not be interested, but thought I'd pass it on. Regarding Marv.....very well put......Gary

Charley, I lost mine too.

Mine was at anchor in the harbor, and I lost it in a storm. D&R Marine will supply you with pintel, gudgeon, & tiller straps for about $150. I will cut a ruddr from 3/4 maarine ply and encapsulate in in fiberglass, using matting to waterprooof it and build it up to a thickness of 1-1/2". I planned to estimate the required dimesions, but if you know the dimensions, I would appreciate it. Please respond to mwermuth@optonline.net Thanks, Mel

Rudder dimensions

I have posted the dimensions, albeit a rough sketch, of the rudder for an Oday 23 '78 model in the photo forum on this site if anyone needs them.

Mel

Thank you, Brian

Thank you, Brian. My boat is a 1974 Model, and the rudder didn't have the notch. The sketch that you provided appears to be an improvement on that design in that the section forward of the notch should make it easier to wrestle with the tiller in a strong wind on Long Island Sound. (There were times when I needed both hands and most of my body weight.) Thanks, again. Mel
