Why does the artist Christo do what he does

Way larger scale......some of his stuff is unbelievable considering the labor involved to complete a project.
Theres a cell phone commercial where they show a whole city and its buildings orange to show coverage and I think of Christo

I am a working artist. It IS what I do for a living. I went to art school and studied art history. No one can make judgements about other peoples artwork without studying the reasons why they make the work they do. You have to spend a little time analyzing and getting into the head of the artist before you can make judgements about the content of their work. Go online, go to his website and read about his work.
Christo's work is all about community. The scale in which he works proves this. I've been in the same room with Christo while he discussed with the public his plans to "wrap" the Arkansas River in Colorado with fabric. He self funds all of his work and he hires hundreds of workers from the community where he works to help construct his pieces. No one is a volunteer. It takes years and sometimes decades to see his work through to completion and the red-tape to get his works approved is all part of his art. Once through that process, the fun begins orchestrating all of his workers and getting everyone involved. It really is a community building event for those fortunate to have one of his temporary pieces in their backyard.
Sorry to rant but I've seen this thread come up every time and I just have to defend my craft.

Rad, look at the small print at the bottom of that ad. You'll see a disclaimer stating that Christo and his wife Jean Claude had nothing to do with the making of that commercial. Either they stole his concept and didn't pay him or and more likely, he didn't want his work to appear to be commercialized.

Even the uncultured are capable to make their own judgements about art. You either like or dislike what the artist does. I don't thinks spending years at school will convince a person otherwise.

I never said you were uncultured, and I never said you had to like it. I don't care for many artists work. I'm even guilty of making snap judgements about work. But what I won't do is comment about it without finding out more.

Art and artists have been around much longer that what ever it is ANY of us do for a living. Many educated folk consider sailing and sailboats works of art..... most artists aren't fortunate enough to make their living creating art.... but they are compelled to do it anyway...just like musicians and writers...... but they make the world a better place.
