Just heard on the news that the San Francisco airport has been cited for pollution of the bay. They have been dumping raw sewage and cyanide into the bay. They have been cited 82 times since 1995. They MAY be subject to a $50,000 fine. Now I ask you, if every boat pumped overboard in the bay for a year, how would that compare to what the airport is doing? They also mentioned that the Park on Angel Island has been cited too. Just imagine all the other entities that are getting away with dumping and have not been cited. This is going on ALL over the USA. It seems that the government always goes after the little guy (like boaters) because they can easily make their lives very difficult. The SF airport could care less about a $50k fine. They spend billions on remodeling their facilites but cannot protect the environment that we all live in. Unfortunately municipalities all over do this on a regular basis. This does not make it right for us to do it but it is just hard to belive.

The Little Man

You are right it is always the little man, or American people, they send our money and jobs overseas, who gets the shaft! Remember big business supports the government, and get their people in!

Yup, and read on

There are many examples of this same situation: As I understand it, in North Carolina, where my family lives, one city (Kinston) recently had to sell its entire municipal utility operations (water, power and sewer, I think) to a private company, in part, to raise enough money to pay the penalies the city incurred for dumping vast amounts raw sewage directly into a river over something like the past 10-15 years. The amounts and numbers I have heard are utterly astounding. Taypayers lost a significant asset, the river is basically dead, waterfront property values probably suffered, all due to poor management, and apparently stupid government. It should have amounted to criminal wrongdoing. But of course, nothing like that ever occurred. But let one of us dump something overboard and here come the police and the do gooders ... I don't, but they shouldn't either.

scary and sad

The oceans of the world are the sum of all water mistakes made by mankind. Steve is right. Yes it is not only going on all over the U S A but the world. I hope mankind will survive this as once the oceans are polluted the downward spiral will continue from there to the extinction of mankind. If I dump anything into water i ask myself If I were a fish or a whale or ocean life, would I like to live in this, unless It is a drain that leads to a sewer treatment plant, pollutants should not be put into water anywhere.
