I have a 2001 Beneteau 331 that gas gauge and hour meter have stop working. I would guess it was an electrical problem as both, not just gas gauge, will work. I can see there are two 100 amp fuse's but to not know where to locate. And does anyone have any other suggestions on what might be the problem?

Hey Jeff,

Don't think my fuel gauge has ever worked, but if the engine starts but hour meter is not working, that is interesting. Is the tac working?

I will look for those fuses when I head down this weekend. Pop one out and see what stops working.

What's your boat name? I am sure I have seen you at some point on the West River.

No tach

Thanks for the reply, I have not seen a tac, only hour meter and gauge.
Not comfortable at this time to give names or address. No disrespect.

quick glance

I did remove back of panel of gauge's and did not see any fuse(s) but does not mean I over looked. Do you know for sure the gauges do have a fuse in the back of gauges? That would be an easy fix for sure.

Volvo LCD hour meters have a habit of failing. I have a procedure that describes how to swap it out somewhere. BTW its still ticking the hours even if the display is dead.

Just wired it to the back of the control panel - spliced into a red and black wire. If your analog meter is not working it's probably a meter issue. These mechanical clocks are fairly robust unlike their LED versions.

Jackdaw,

I would really like to have the procedure you mentioned. The Volvo LDC hour meter on our 36.7 failed intermittently and now apparently permanently.

I replaced the original Westerbeke analog/digital meter with a Hobbs meter. Not because it was not working but because I needed the space for an engine water temp gauge. The Hobbs meter is very small and easy to wire and fit.

PS. A Hobbs meter is what they use on small planes to keep track of engine hours when renting. A google search will provide all details.

As far as the diesel fuel gauge, you have to connect an ohmmeter to the wires and lift the float up and down by hand and see if the resistance changes. The range depends on the brand. If it's not the float, then check the gauge for loose wires. There is a test for the gauge too but don't remember it right now. Good luck.

Thanks

Thank you for the information. Will try ohmmeter on fuel gauge. Would like to believe that because both gauges stopped at the same time, something caused both. But truth can be stranger than fiction! Thanks again for information, will let you know what happens.
