If you go to this link you will find the current issue of the sailing magazine, Northern Breezes. The cover photo was taken by my husband, Captain Grumpy. It was taken on our boat Emmanuel while we were at anchor in Lighthouse Bay, Sand Island, in the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior. The story that goes with the picture is on page 8, "Sailing Western Lake Superior". In the photo are me and my friend John. Thanks!

Sam- I read the article last week. Great read. Its kind of neat when you know the people. Currently in a search for new employment. The kind of "job" that I had to do in Bloomington and other places has taken its toll. I do plan on the Apostles next August. I think that I will be pretty flexible on dates? Rob Hessenius

Actually I am Sam (nickname of mine). John is my best "girlfriend". He introduced Captain Grumpy and I to sailing years ago. The three of us have sailed together a lot over the years and always have a great time.

Princess Sam.

So would that be short for Samantha perhaps? Nice article. I have often wondered if some money (even a token) could be made by writing well thought out logs as you did and finding an interested publisher (as you apparently did). If you liked Solzenitzen (sp.) then you like the written word so it could be fun to edit your trips into stories. Do they pay much (if at all)? Good work and keep on playing that horn!

No need to feel stupid!

My real name is Sandra, all my friends call me Sam. People ask how do you get Sam out of Sandra? I ask them, how do you get Dick out of Richard? Anyway, the story submissions really started because I started to keep what I thought was a ships log back in 2004 when we bought our Hunter 34. At the end of the summer I realized it was more than that since most days I recorded my observations and thoughts. I get a small check ($50) but for me it's really not about the money. I get a kick out of seeing my stuff in print. Kind of pathetic but that's just me.

Very good article ...

That was some very nice writing and a very enjoyable read. There is some talent there! I haven't read any accounts in Sail that capture the readers interest more than yours! Lake Superior does have a unique quality for some interesting stories!

Princess Can you sail Year Round??

I know that small lakes freeze solid or at least they used to in MN. But with global warming and such does the lake freeze now??? Or even without freezing is it just too cold to sail in the winter??? The great circle of the easten USA is one of our little dreams. But timing is everything. If we left Chesapeake in the early spring we could then head up the east coast and then into the great lakes. But it might require a bit of a rush to avoid cold weather the following fall. Lake Superior isn't part of the route but would seem like a great detour. Being from the south we would of course like to be back south before the gators hibernate!!!

Too cold to sail year round

here. We haul every winter. We sail in the Apostle Islands and the lake here does freeze. I don't know if every inch of the lake freezes but most of it does. If you ever do the circle and you are here anytime May to October, be sure you let me know!
