Don't misundertake me! This is an old solution to corrosion. The sodium silicate/water solution dries to a virtually invisible coating. The baking seals it. It has been used on motorcycles for years to protect sidecases, etc,. You can get it at any chemical supply house/hobby shop. I know it works, I just don't know the exact sodium/water ratio.

What are the advantages?

John: What are the advantages of using this vs. anodizing or powder coating? I must assume cost!

Yes, Cost

The sodium silicate costs pennies. The U.S. Navy uses it for petes sake! I believe you mix a 1/2 cup s.s. to 2 cups distilled water. stir till disolved, then paint on the aluminum part. let dry for 24 Hr.'s Then bake in a 200F oven for 2 hr.'s The s.s melts , and forms a protective coating. It would probably cost 2 dollars. Is that enough incentive?
