Have a 1980 c25 tall rig and really like the boat but don't like the lack of head room. Have been thinking of having top of sail modified so I can raise the boom 20 inchs. Just like to know what you think. Thanks in advance.

I just did exactly that about 6 weeks ago. Bought a used main of a C25 Standard Rig and put it on. It allowed me to raise the boom high enough for me to stand under it without ducking and I am 6'1". Next I plan on putting on a bimini that I can stand under. There has been little to no effect on performance. I highly recommend it.
You'd need to modify the BOTTOM of the sail, not the top.

I had a similar issue years ago on a Chysler dinghy.......I didn't like having the potential of the boom hitting me in the head. They cut my sail from the top and re-shaped the back of the sail. This was easier, cheaper, and won't screw with your reef points.
