Hello my name is Lonie I have Balboa 20. I live in northern WI and sail Lake superior about 4 to 6 times a summer. No one I know has a sailboat,and it would be more fun to go with a friend who owned a sailboat.

LOL....I tend to sail single handed but I always end up having fun. I have tried to get a bunch of sailors together once in a while and it seems to be working some. Hang around the docks and start talking to other people with sailboats. Eventually you will find some like-minded people.
If not...time to move further south and try sailing in a warmer climate!!!

Do you sail the Apostle Islands when you come up to Superior? If so, use the Buffalo Bay Marina launch (three miles north of Bayfield) and hang around the marina for a night or two. You'll always find some of the marina folk hanging out by the bonfire near the docks, especially on the weekends. We're in slip #22, boat name Olo2.
And about that warmer climate...it sure would be nice to sail year round, I'm especially envious around January, readind about the escapades of you southern sailors, however, the shorter season sure helps me appreciate what I have and where I get to sail. I love that when the boat gets hauled out in the fall, I could pressure wash and paint the bottom in the same day. No scraping, scrubbing...plus, I can dip a bucket in the lake and drink from it (well, almost).

It seems to me you are looking for other people with boats, rather than having someone sail with you on your boat.
Yup, docks are great places to meet sailors and crew. Your boat, your choice.
Every year a dozen people say they would love to go....but every year perhaps one person goes. I generally find it is a big pain in the @ss even bothering and typically give up by mid year. Even friends who are sailors, who used to have club memberships renting boats want to buy a boat but can't find the time to take a free ride. Maybe it is me LOL. Actually I think I am pretty good. Nodody has ever threatened to mutiny. So I sail solo, but then get my time in at the club talking to other sailors. I am also always willing to sail on somebody else's boat. There is always something to learn or to teach on a sailboat.

find a club or marina that sponsors racing. It's a great way to meet people and there's always a boat that's shorthanded, looking for crew. You'll learn a lot, make friends, and have a good time to boot!
I single hand my own boat for cruising and drive a dockmate's boat when racing. While I enjoy the solitude, the after race parties are so much fun!

ye know--it ISNT as much fun sailing alone--but sometimes it realllly is.....long passages out in the cockpit in the sea with no one there and no one awake--even the kat is sleeping---moon and stars-----milky way glowing----just the sound of wind and sea on your boat as you pass thru --then a dolphin jumps out through a wave toward you-flying fish crossing your boat to escape something trying to eat them or just scared by your hull passing through the schoool---is awesome--either way, solo or with a friend......
I count myself lucky that my wife has been very enthusiastic about sailing, so most of the time we're out together, and so far, it's been a very good thing. However my weather tolerance is still wider than hers, so on occasion I'm out with a buddy. I still haven't single-handed this boat much, but at 19' I have no excuse for not singlehanding her whenever the mood strikes, and I may just do so next year, work (or lack of work) permitting.
We enjoy belonging to a yacht club, and we are also part of a very active class association that holds some great outings every year.
