1993 37.5 Legend Why is it that I don't always get an alarm sound when shutting the engine off? Some times I pull the kill nob and the alarm sounds prior to me turning off the key and other times there is no alarm!

Shutdown alarm

The alarm you get when shutting down is trigered by the drop in oil pressure when the engine stops. I make it a habit to wait for it before turning the key off. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Buford, GA imd_ga@hotmail.com

Pat doesn't answer why it happens, though. And does it matter?

Bill,

The time required for the drop in oil pressure to be surpassed by the spring has several variables. Most noteibly temperature. If you run the engine for a long time, the alarm should come on sooner. I always listen for the alarm on shutdown as a way of confirming the alarm works. Do you get the light every time? even with out the audible alarm? It can matter, if the audible alarm is failing (light/no audible) then you could miss an oil pressure failure alarm. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Buford, GA imd_ga@hotmail.com

Oil passage blockage

OR it could be that your oil passages are restricted! OR your oil is old and thick with junk. I saw a Ford truck once that had a plug of oil comming out the oil drain hole that was the consistancy of peanut butter. It ran fine BTW. OR and most likely, the oil sender on the engine is gunned up. The oil does not actually flow through the sender but only past it. Try taking the sender out and cleaning the hole. Don't poke through the diaphram inside though. Bill Roosa

remove and clean pressure sensor

or replace. If the alarm does not come on, then the oil pressure switch (which activates the alarm) is not sensing zero (or low pressure) when the pump stops. At the very least I would change the oil and change it earlier than average for a while. Procedures for testing oil, water temp, and any other alarms are in your engine manual.
