39 I believe. It's poised to ride right up the Gulf Stream, feeding on all that nice warm water as it goes. Trees were killed in Vermont after that storm by salt carried in from the CT shore by the wind.
I just shelled out for a G-37 anchor, rated for boats up to 47 feet, which is now stowed in pieces in my bilge along with box of chain that fills one of the bays under the floor boards. I've got to pick up a few more shackles and I'll be ready to head off and set up a little cove somewhere.
Good that the forecast is for it to stay offshore.. Keeps yall on the weaker side, which makes for some big waves and a stiff breeze.. No fun anyway! Today is the fifth year anniversary of our little Katrina problem. Louisiana was on the weaker side of that one, and it made a bit of a mess in New Orleans! . Watching the tropical Atlantic very carefully, as is normal for us, this time of year. The new disturbance, 97, certainly bears watching too. Looks like Bermuda is going to be in for it twice in a row.. Not good.

A meteorologist neighbor who works for one of the big forecasting outfits says that predictions on this one are apt to be less reliable than normal. Steering systems are weak, models in poor agreement, it could go anywhere.
Thinking, hey I'm already out of the water.
Sometimes I get thinking having a problem wasn't so bad. Hope you guys in the water make out OK.

We left Florida and came up to NY thinking cooler weather and no storms,must be time to leave I guess.
It's really too soon to tell yet so don't worry yet.

I'm on the Boat/US weather alert mailing list. The latest one for Earl posted a short while before I write this showed the major predicted impact area has moved further to the East, with you guys Down East feeling the effect by the end of the week. Certainly better than a direct hit!
Hopefully we'll all get spared if that Mid-West front combines with the High sitting over the Mid-Atlantic to push the storm further offshore.
For the Chesapeake Bay, an off-shore storm like this one will blow the water out of the Bay, putting where I sail in very low water for a couple of days. With an in-land storm such as Isabel was a few years ago, the opposite happens and we had well over 8 feet of water piled up into the Top of the Bay, which wrecked havoc with marinas, shore-side businesses and boat owners alike. Annapolis had over 3 feet of water on the streets around Ego Alley--an amazing sight!

This is the time when I'm very glad I'm on a mooring instead of in a slip. Out on the mooring all I need worry about is the ground tackle holding together. I'll triple it up before the storm hits and remove all sails and canvas. Also remove the anchor on the bow, they've been know to cut through ground tackle in waves. Sure hope this sucker drifts eastward.
Was sure we'd get hit in corpus last year, just got to the Chesapeake and figured there would be less of a problem with storms up here... go figure. We payed our premium for the year, so I'll double the lines and go from there.
I will be headed to the marina on Thursday to make preparations. We are just inside that cone of probability but I expect at least a nor'easter out of the deal. If that's the case then it will be movies and a bottle of port with everyone else who decides to come on down.

I will keep an eye on the tide tables and see when this mess is due in the Cheaspeake area. Everything came together just right for Isabel. I doubled up my lines, put out fenders all around the boat, and came through o.k. on that one. Real problem was the tide.
One thing you have to remember is the SOB's boat next to yours. You know the guy that only comes down once-in-a-while, or lets his kids take the boat out. The same guy that never changes his dock lines that are old and would not even hold a row boat. That is the same one that got my last boat. And all his insurance agent could say it was an "Act of God". Keep an eye on them
Now, I heard about Nor'easters last year that produced 70knt winds... do people prep for those the same as you would for a hurricane? at what point do lines need to be doubled? NOAA's forecast has it brushing the coast and not making landfall, so what do you expect from these types of storms?? Back in Corpus our plan was to tie up the best we could and head to Austin for some home-cooked meals. Here, I feel the intensity would be less and I should ride out aboard... although it's getting up on the scale.
We usually check the entire dock. Most of the people are pretty good but there are some that we have to take care of. There's one guy who has his 37ft cruiser "secured" with nylon rope....it's thick but it's just a glorified clothesline. I'm sure we will have to tie him up with some of our (our little group's) extra lines.
Def. double lines and a catch line or two between the slips that are common (we have 2 slips between finger docks) and canvas down. Some will lace up the jib and tie the roller drum so it can't spin and lace up the main as well as an alternative to taking them down if it's not going to be too bad of a storm. Most don't leave the marina since we are relatively protected (especially if you take the simple precautions) and we have floating docks.
I've ridden (if that's even a word!) out all of the decent storms since we had the last boat and this is the first predicted one since we got the new one so I will probably be down there with the regulars, sitting aboard, eating whatever we decide to make, drinking wine and listening to music. Hurricane may be a different story though!!! As much as I would love to ride that out, I have a 7 year old and a daughter in college who need me to pay for things!!!!
