It is a shame he is being dumped on because he is nobody...I would probably had a few drinks if I lost everything. And as far as the pr*cks that want to prosecute him, boy do they have shot memories, I seem to remember a family from Hyanisport, that dropped a car, in Chappaquidick, not only with "OMG" gas in it, but a person also, a nephew who flew a fully gassed plane into the water. I don,t recall them being treated anything like this..... And a history of alcohol...please...Its bull*hit and privlidge.....Sorry I should not sugar coat it....Red
An old friend of mine says "Don't be broke in America". Unfortunately, I think that applies here.

"Barnes said he did not regret attempting to become the first American to circumnavigate the globe solo."

Seems to me Joshua Slocum gets to claim that honor. Maybe Barnes meant to say "non-stop" - would he have been the first US citizen to do that?
What about Dodge Morgan on American Promise?

What about Dodge Morgan on American Promise?
Yep. BTW, Morgan passed away last year, following from his on-line obit at the Washington Post:

Dodge Morgan, 78, a self-made millionaire who braved fierce winds and endured profound loneliness to become the first American to sail single-handedly around the world without stopping, died Sept. 14 of complications from surgery for cancer at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Mr. Morgan was the fourth person in history to complete a solo, nonstop circumnavigation of the globe. Piloting a 60-foot custom-built boat, he had set out to break the world speed record -- 292 days, set in 1971 by Briton Chay Blyth -- and ended up shattering it, arriving in Bermuda to cheering crowds on April 11, 1986, a mere 150 days after departing.

Yeah, here's the thing -- the city of Norfolk is plenty messed up from the storm. Parts stilll don't have power. I don't see anyone giving the city 3 days to get everything fixed!!!
Excellent!

That could well be the appropriate message to the City.

Barnes wanted to be the first to sail from a west coast port. If you read his complete blog you find that he complained about all the racket that his rigging made because he had set it and now it was flogging because the wind had shifted and his auto pilot was holding the course he programed into it.

I kind of felt bad for the guy until the drunkenness problem was brought to light. He has a ton of issues apparently. Guys like that can give the sailing community a black eye.

it always amazes me how we love an underdog....until the dog goes under....sorta felt sorry for him with the boat problem ...now i really feel sorry for him ...he is on a downward spiral and fueling the speed of that fall with a drinking problem based on what i have read so far...some come out of it and some never do...and the sad part is no one but no one can help him but his self...if he doesnt see what is going on with his self he will totally self distruct....

Divorced, lost custody of kids, no insurance on boat, boat beached,GF missing, arrested twice within a week for drinking, crapping in a police car , people who would have helped are running the other way....hmm....

Sounds like he's working on a story for an anonymous meeting that hopefully he finds real soon

This whole thing is being handled so badly by both sides...Virginia does not have to cut up the boat....thats just stupid.....There is more navy in Virginia probably anywhere in the US, forget for a minute whos to blame and spend a couple of hours some slings and a chinook copter and set the boat on the hard, and argue about it later...how do these political ass*oles find their way home at nite... forget for a minute whos to blame and spend a couple of hours some slings and a chinook copter and set the boat on the hard, and argue about it later.

and WHO pays the $10-12K chopper time, assumes the liablilty, and just where on the hard do you set the boat?? Likely a $50-60K coventional salvage, easily double that if you use the chopper, trailers and crane. And that is IF they could get permission to dig the beach (chesapeake protection act, Corps of Engineers, EPA, and dozens of others would have to give permission just to drive on it, let alone dig it up)..the rest of us can't even get permission to fix a 30 year old dock without an act of god with these groups.

And if you/they did, the city, state and anyone connected to this fiasco would be chewed a new one...in short order - for using resources illegally.

Yes, I would be the first to complain about using these resources to "help"....that is what is wrong with this country in the first place, reward bad behavior, he didn't really mean to leave in hurricane, disable the engine, drink, rattle the shelter, etc. Crapola!

The owner has/had all the options any other boat owner would have, should their boat suffer a similar fate. No one, or no city or state or the Navy/CG/etc offers to pay for the others less/more worthy than this guy. Why should they?

He made the mess, he has consistently added to it....he and he alone can clean it up.

Anyone beginning to see a pattern here?

YES Its called 'Hopelessness' It seems as though he has been forced into the 'Most' expensive solution to move the boat off the beach, one that he can not afford. If the boat IS floatable and not taking on water seriously I wonder why they have refused the towing option?? I can certainly remember stories about other boats being totally disabled and being towed, some with aux pumps put aboard to pump the water out to keep them afloat.

Sometimes society finds someone who is down and kicks the 'Hell' out of them until they can no longer move. I hope he survives and stays human, although its easier to roll over and die.

PS This Thread was NOT SET UP to bash the poor guy!! If that is your interest then get off your sorry ASS(s) and start your own thread!!!!!!!!!

since you own this thread, and I am one that has a differing opinion....

first no one is forcing him in to the most expensive solution...he did that by not having insurance or sufficient cash/resources.

Secondly "towing"....digging up the beach to get this boat off, MAY be possible (see the above post about being allowed to even drive on the beach, let alone dig, it is illegal in the state to do either)....getting it over the breakwater a few hundred yards off shore is NOT going to be possible without damaging the boat further and risking some one getting seriously hurt. And that assumes someone is going to be able to TOW him down the beach, across the breakwater and in to deeper water...then what do you do with him/the boat?

No marina in the state is going to take a boat with this much damage and no insurance...the risk of oil spill is enough to ensure that.

Anyone that wants to take the skipper in, is free to do so - step up, let the folks in Norfolk know, or simply appear and throw his bail - as he has again been arrested.....and take him with you. It IS that simple.

No one is kicking your favorite child, he has and continues to bring this on himself. Even if you don't believe a word of the multiple media forms....

just a cup full of this fellow is enough to make even the most bleeding heart person, turn away...Society is not kicking him, some of us believe the first thing you do when you fall in a hole, is to QUIT DIGGING...

If his credit is good he can get a bank loan to have the boat pulled off the beach by a tug. Sliding it across a hundred yards of sand won't harm it. They pull ships off groundings frequenty.
I posted a link to the charts of the area where this event occured. The Elizabeth River is a good a shelter as you could find in that area. The area where he anchored and took a nap is exposed the the mouth of the bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Willoughby spit was a lee shore as soon as the wind went north of east. If you have the charity to still give this man a pass then you are a far better sport than I.

This guy has his problems and no question they are self inflicted but that has nothing to do with the actions of the City of Norfolk in terms of the vessel. Don't lose sight of the fact they have been arbitrary and heavy handed in their own regard. Therein lies the real problem for the boating community.

Hey Neil
I tend to agree with you however, I'd say it is a problem for the idiots in the sailing community. There are not many here that can attest to having his problems, probably due to the lack of poor judgement. We all have some of the issues that this poor sap has run into, however, we typically don't have them one after another in rapid fashion, which i think is the real problem. Most boats will suffer a bad decision here and there but this one has had to preform in a fashion that is just unreasonable.
A clear cut case of natural selection.
