Clyde,
I have been exploring the repainting of my deck. I have arrived at the strategy of removing (sanding flat) the original (1974) molded non-skid on my "This Old Boat" and then painting a non-skid. I like the stuff called "SoftSand" as a non-skid material.
SoftSand Rubber from SoftPoint Industries | SoftSand particles are a rubber-based paint additive for a comfortable, colorful, and skid-resistant surface
The trouble with painting over the molded non-skid, is getting a clean paint ready surface in all those pretty little square dimples. You just cannot be sure all the contaminates that prevent paint from bonding to the surface are removed. You end up with a pretty paint job that starts to flake and peal in a short time.
Good Old Boat magazine did an interesting article about an owner with what he thought was a magnificent painting job... "Sticking Point" The DIY deck paint job looked fantastic. Then the surveyor showed up.
