We have a 1980 30ft Catalina. The cabin floor is extremely slippery wet or dry. We have tried using ruder mats, but they just collect dirt. We are considering painting the floor with a non-skid paint. Has anybody done this? We have also thought about buying the stick down sand paper looking strips. What do you use on your cabin floor. Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks Bob

Bob, When the rubber mats collect dirt tie a string to one

corner and throw them over board. What is the cabin floor material? You can sprinkle anti-skid compound onto fresh varnish and allow that to dry. You can't have a mirror shiny non-skid finish the two just don't fit in the same sentence.

fiberglass sole

That looks like some good stuff Tim. But our cabin sole is fiberglass. Walking into the head near the bow the sole is rounded and very slippery to walk on. The galley sole is rounded and slippery also. I'm worried that non-skid paint will be hard on the feet after awhile. We have tried rubber mats but he wife hate them. We are looking for alternatives. Thanks Greg

Cabin sole

Interesting problem. Have you considered fabricating a wood sole? This stuff is not cheap but is available. Then I'd finish it with Ultimate Sole. Might class up the cabin also.

Saw this stuff @

the Maine Boat Builders show. They are cork-like strips that are about 1 1/2" wide, 3/8" thick... I don't know the length... they have to be at least 4' long. Spread some mastic with a notched trowle... lay these pieces in there. After the mastic has cured to the substrate... you fill in the top dado with the same mastic... out of a calking gun I guess... let harden... and shave down. When it is all said and done... it has an appearance of a teak and holly floor... except it is cork and dark mastic. Stazo Marine Equipmment. It is called Marine Deck 2000 My measurements area a guess, however you can visit this link. Very cool stuff.

Durabec is not for cabin sole use.

It will rip the dickens out of your feet and/or socks. You would have to wear your shoes all the time around this product. It is designed for commercial heavy duty deck use - ferries etc.

JimQ 26, I fail to see how my post supports you.

handicap ramps/pools and spas/sealing rusty pipes/playgrounds. The preceding is a copy and paste from Durabak. If it is suitable for pools and spas then I should think cabin soles would also be in that category. If you disagree, then please explain how you reached that conclusion.

Many people with Catalina 30s have used

regular or outdoor carpeting. Have you tried the C30 Association website?

-from Home Depot of course! I wash and then wax my cabin floor every spring and make it really slick & slippery to keep the dirt from sticking. I cut the carpet to custom fit edge to every edge. With the rubber backing it does not move and I have sure footing all the time. Once a month or so I lift it to vacuum the accumulated sand & dirt. Works Jim Dandy!

Jimq26... Bob.....

Jim, I believe you made your point clearly. I wonder why Ross can't see that. Bob, like Calif. Ted's comment, I bought a couple of rubber backed kitchen rugs that fit nicely and are very easy to maintain. If you're really serious, build a laminated wood sole as suggested in some of the previous posts.

Rubber Backed Rugs Too

Our Precision 23 has non-skid on the cabin floor. It's not kind to the feet. It's great when we have shoes on our feet. We put down a couple of rubber backed rugs and it looks nice too. I've thought about a custom fitted carpet that snaps in like some of the powerboats have. JerryA

Joe , the last time I looked people have a lot of exposed skin when

they are using a pool or a spa. If Durabak is recommended for those uses then what what would be objectionable about its use in the interior of a boat?

OK Ross - you are so sure you are right?

You have never seen the product but are sure that it will work? Durabak will send you a sample chip of their product. You get the sample and rub it on your butt. Then come back and tell us how comfortable it was. I know that it will chafe and be rough to skin because I have seen it. Several years ago I was thinking of using it on the cockpit floor since my 30 some year old antiskid had worn down. This product is just too rough for an area where you want to be in bare feet on occasions. Here is a link to rhinohide - who actually make a soft rubber antiskid - http://www.rhinohide.com/prod_detail.aspx?prod=7 I also have a link to kiwigrip. That is the product I ended up going with for the floor in the cockpit. Fantastic anti skid, yet comfortable. Sorry - don't know how they would work on the cabin sole. We have no problem with slippage on our teak & holly sole which has 6 coats of urethane on the top.

Jimq26, I have seen several different grades in pick-up trucks

some of it is as rough as 50 grit sand paper and some is a smooth peeble finish that wouldn't scratch a baby's butt.

My previous boat , a 86 Catalina 30, came with carpet

in the main cabin. I repaced it with some burber from a local carpet store. I had the edges bound. It work great for years. At the end of the year you take it home to clean it. Get something multicolored so it doesn't show every little spec of dirt. If you don't have a pattern find someone that has a similar model Catalina 30. This is a lot easier than putting in new flooring.
