Non-skid for deck

Hi, we are in the process of painting our deck. My wife doesn't want to add the sand or other filler to get non-skid. We have seen a product that is like a mat you cut to size and glue down. Has anyone any experience with this product? Who is the manufacturer? You help is appreciated.

Treadmaster?

is probably what you are thinking about. It is excellent for traction and wears extremely well and if you can get over the industrial look, it works great whjich is why you see it on so many racing boat bows

I put treadmaster on my "64 Paceship Eastwind and was still bery satisfied 13 years later when I sold the boat. Great stuff.

Be careful ...

We looked at a 30' Cal that had the stuff all over the decks. The owners liked it because they frequently raced their boat. The broker that was listing it complained that everybody who looked at the boat turned away from it because the treadmaster was so ugly (it was an industrial gray). We concurred.The boat was not selling, and removing the stuff was next to impossible without creating a huge mess. It may be a horrible idea if you think you may want to sell the boat sometime.

Durabak

Something else just to consider which I think I am going to do on my boat is Durabak. It is reported to be extremely tough with small rubber granules mixed in for texture. Supposed to be very easy to apply also. Clean the area, mask it off and just roll it on. A choice of colors too. There was a review of it in Good Old Boat. See attached link.

Stripping the deck

Right now, we are stripping the deck down to the gelcoat. The PO had any combination of West Marine paint and house paint on it. It had sand as non skid. This has been a pain to get off, but we are almost there. My wife said she didn't want any additives like sand in the paint and anted this mat type nonskid. Hence, my question. Thanks for the replys.

Rhinohide softer than Durabak

Easier on your bare skin (feet or butt). Their formula uses a softer rubber material.

Gelcoat

Have you considered gelcoat as a non-skid? That is what Hunter and many other mfg have used in the past. You need a paintable/rollable gelcoat. If you use this product you need a thickener and a roller. The wax is in the product so once it is dry all you need to do is strip off the masking and you are ready to go.
