non-skid decks

Has anyone re-painted their upper deck & if so how did you approach the non-skid portion of the project?
I know there are several products like kiwigrip, etc, out there but I would like non-skid area to be the same color as the deck/cabin top. I was talking w/ the Interlux rep at the boston boat show & he said that in order to use their product you would need to sand the existing non-skid off before applying the interdeck ot intergrip product.
That seems like a lot of extra work to me, any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

I've used Installed Kiwigrip about 3 years ago on the deck of my Hunter 25 "Cheryl Ann". It was very easy to install, Double powerwash the deck, let it dry and then paint/roll it on following their instructions.

So far I've been impressed. No chips, flakes or peels and it is holding its own as far as non-skid. It does turn out a little rough for bare knees but otherwise it's been great.

It comes in a variety of colors and probably could be tinted if desired. ONe item I noted when I was installing it seemed to work bet on a cloudy day, direct sunlight made it harden fast and you had to speed up your work but, otherwise it was easy to install and easy to clean up

I was told by the Interlux rep that the molded in non skid would have to be sanded off to avoid pooling of the product. I never had given that any thought but it makes sense given the peaks & valleys of a molded non skid. I didn't know that the kiwi grip could be tinted so that may be one way of approaching the project.

i used the interdeck product and i am satisfied with the job, it is really easy to apply, and made a nice deck, soft enuf for my knee and yet nonslip. it did wear off at one spot where the kayac was rubbing the deck, took the can out and in no time the rub spot had disapeered

Did you apply it over a molded non-skid deck pattern?

I used Interlux single part poly-u a number of years ago on my old Alberg's topsides-I used the additive non-skid material they offered amd mixed it into the paint on the non-skid areas. It worked very well.

If you're interested in going all out, Gibco Flex Mold has Sabre Yachts 302 and 103 patterns that allow molding in your original nonskid with gelcoat. I used this process on my Oday 27 and after some practice the results were as good if not better than the day it came out of the factory.

3 seasons ago my wife painted our deck (Pearson 323) with Brightside and sprinkled Interlux non skid granules on it. Dec had not been painted previously. No special treatment to the molded non skid. It worked fine. Starting to see a few chips now. We took ALL deck fittings and hardware off. Not sure if we'll do it again when/if needed. It was a lot of work.
