It's nearly impossible to sleep in the aft berth of our 311 due to the loud slapping noise from wavelets against the underside of the stern. Anybody figured out a solution? Also, the lack of berth space to sleep more people is a major shortcoming. Has anybody successfully converted the two-post dining table so you can create a berth, or altered a saloon seat to make a wider berth?

Shortcoming with all sugar scoop stern boats

As the previous owner of a 311 and now the owner of a 393, we all share your frustration. The wave slap is a common feature of all sugar scoop stern boats. I have seen a product advertised that places wave dampeners under the exposed part of the stern. The only problem I see with that product is where to store it-it has to take up a ton of room.

Reverse

You don't say if you are at a mooring or a slip. In either case, reverse the boat so the waves strike the bow. No noise, better sleep. Jim p.s. over time we have grown accustomed to the sounds of the sea that lull us off to sleep.

Cheap Solution?

I have heard, though not tried, that a pool noodle tied under the stern will interfere with the wave slap.

thanks for the replies to noisy stern!

Thanks to Pat H, Jentine and Joe: I'm going to try the pool noodle---maybe two. I'll post the results. Re Jentine: when we anchor at the Santa Barbara Channel Islands, the echoe of waves from rock shores defeats attempts to turn the boat so waves don't slap. And Joe: I too am lulled by wavelets. But this is WAAAAAY past lulling. It's more like getting slapped on the ear. Sleep tight and good sailing! MGreen

Slap Silencer

After a very brief search, I found the product I had referenced earlier that claims to eliminate or minimize the hull slap while anchored. Take a look at www.slapsilencer.com for the product information. No experience with the product-have just seen it advertised. Still looks like a lot of product to store while not anchored.

Once you get this solved,

let me know how to keep carp from feeding on algae off the bottom of a boat. This happens in our slips in a an inland lake. Some of these large fish sound like a jackhammer when they start working on the boat. It's loud enough that you can hear them several boats away. I've gotten used to the wave slap. If it really annoys you, try the v-berth on windy nights.

slapsilencer

Joe, Thanks for the referral to slapsilencer. I'll check it out. But I haven't heard from anybody about making the salon berths in a 311 wider or converting the fixed dining table so it joins with the portside salon seat to make a berth. Nobody's tried it?

My solution to more sleeping space

The only cure I found for more sleeping room was to upgrade to my 393 :)

Get used to it

You'll get used to it. Not a good idea to sleep too soundly on a boat anyway. :) I don't think hanging anything over the stern is a good idea. One day you'll have one of those three o'clock in the morning fire drills and even if this slap thing floats I bet someting might get caught in the rudder or prop.

Stern slap

Have a 35S5 with the same problem. People have sold or offered several "fixes" which don't really work. Try tying a large fender under the stern to reduce the slap. Or, like we do, sleep forward. We have for 10 years now.
