My cutlass bearing on my 2007 hunter 36 should did sound noisy when I was winterizing out of the water. I must have accidently knocked it into gear when running the engine to pour ant-freez and while pouring the ant-freez in the noise from the bearing was very loud. I did check for play and no play in it but the noise sounded noisy. Should it be so noisy it's only the first season with this boat. Nick

Play is the thing

As long as there's no play in the shaft, you'll be fine. Boat is so new it's highly unlikely the cutlass bearing is worn.

Dry equals noise

Just a few weeks ago my boat was on the hard. The first day I checked the cutlass bearing by turning the shaft by hand, and it worked easily and quietly. About a week later, still on the hard, I tried it and it made an uncomfortable loud squeeking noise like metal on metal. Concerned, I asked the yard manager over to explain, and he said when they get dry they make noise. The water lubricates. Sounds like a similar situation. S.

Much Better

Ok Thanks guys after listening to you I do feel a little better, I will ask the yard fellow to listen just to play safe. I know its really new but I don't ever remember hearing a bearing making noise, but maybe I never put it in gear on the hard either. Thanks again. Nick
