When our boat is anchored or at the dock with the wind forward, there is really a tremendous amount of noise and clatter. We had in-mast furling on our previous boat, but any noise that made was minimal. We have tightened everything and pulled the mainsail in most of the way. Any suggestions?

Thanks. Jayncee

Jayncee,

I am in the same boat (sorry). I was told to retune the mast but that could get very expensive quick if you are chasing a ghost. On my boat it happens in all wind conditions from dead calm to 20 plus knots. Sailing, motoring or in the slip I can hear the humming, very annoying.

What I have done is to let the boom rest on the arch and loose the main sheet/outhaul as a temporary solution and it has minimized the humming significantly. I would like to put a piece of wood under the boom to reduce the metal to metal contact between the boom and the arch. I tried like you tightening all the lines and the humming was worse, I can hear the humming at the end of the boom and at the base of the mast inside the forward cabin. Do you have a spinnaker halyard?

Maybe we should call hunter marine since there is more than one boat w/the same problem. Where did you buy your H49?

Was that you under the Bay Bridge Saturday afternoon? We turned around after the freighter went under the bridge to chase you (or whoever was in the H49) and we were doing 8 knots under the bridge very fast boat but lost the 49 in the crowd.

got the same thing on my H356

Very weird though, it doesn't always happen. Sometimes I release the tension on the outhual and it stops. Yesterday noticed the humming with the wind only about 2kts and seemed to be coming from the mast.

Yes, we were sailing and saw you going north. We had a great sail. Went north to the Patapsco From Castle Harbor Marina and then turned and went south.

I talked to some H46 owners on Sunday that were moored in Annapolis and they don`t have any noise with their in-mast furling. Suggested we call Hunter and I also thought about calling Selden. Maybe with 2 of us with the same problem they`ll investigate.

Yes,we have a spinnaker halyard but that`s not part of the noise since we sometimes attach it to the bow pulpit if we notice is slapping on the mast.

We ordered our boat from Tidewater in Havre de Grace.

We have also released the tension on the outhaul but it doesn`t seem to help much.

It`s very noisy in the cockpit at times and also in the forward cabin. Most of the noise seems to be from the boom.

Let`s see what Hunter says. Tidewater said the rigger said there is nothing we can do.

I assume you have tried slackening the topping lift. Our will humm in a breeze if we don"t and that always stops it.

Having the same issue, I did a couple of things that seemed to help a lot. The first was I put a bungee around the boom about half way to keep the out haul from slapping. The second was to lift the boom with the topping lift about 4 or 5 inches and made sure that the boom vang was not loaded. This really stopped the humming from the wind. I still get some humming in high wind but it's very tolerable.

In-Mast furling noise

We have tried the shock cord but with no success. We`ll try lifting the boom and we`ll see what happens. Thanks.

Sorry I didn't mean vertical. Just lift it a few inches

On my 49 (in mast selden rig) I have had a gas strut fitted in the Selden kicker (as supplied by selden). We do not use a topping lift at all - the gas strut will lift the boom and we get no humming at all.

We do get a lot of clattering from the outhaul on the boom when the wind is from the stern but this is easily fixed with a bungy holding the outhaul down one side of the boom

Hope this helps
