I do not know wat's going on with my H31/84 I did engine aligment. Works nice up to 3600RPM without any vibrations. When I put in gear, looks fine at 1200RPM, but than start banging at stern. I had a divers to check shaft and tighten a prpeller. And still the same. Please help me with any suggestion, before I need to houl the boat. Thanks,

recheck engine aligment

If you did not have the knocking before you did the aligment recheck the aligment job. The noise is the shaft banging where it goes thru the hull and it is not aligned with the engine. How about the cutlass bearing did the diver check it and if so how much play is there? Recheck your work! Good Luck !

YUP ALIGNMENT

I had same problem. Paid a "professional" last time boat was out. Still had problem. This time I checked it myself. Had one heck of a groove in the shaft where it exits hull. Adjusted it myself and it works fine now. GOOD LUCK Hope yours is as simple

Stiffer is Better

Robert, My '85 H34 also bangs when I put it in gear and put a load on the engine. I aligned the engine to within .001" of the shaft flange and it still made the banging noise. Then I played with the alignment to move the shaft in all different directions. no matter where I positioned the shaft, I could still get it to bang under load. I came to the conclusion that the motor mounts just aren't stiff enough to keep the engine in place enough to keep the shaft from banging. As soon as it starts bugging me enough to spend the $400 for new mounts, I'll let you know if that fixes it.

Torque

I believe the mounts will allow the engine torque to achieve an improper alignment. If they are rubber and over 10yrs. old, they may need to be replaced. Is one broken?

Detective work

I've been trying to track down that mystery "noise" for years. I've had the engine alignment checked, motor mounts checked, replaced the cutlass bearing, even put a rosary in the aft locker. I still can't find the source of the noise. It's even more noticeable when I turn the helm to the right. What's even more strange is that the vibration is there with the engine running or engine off under sail. I have a Gori folding prop and shift into reverse while under sail to keep the prop flat and to prevent spinning. However, the noise is louder with the engine on and transmission engaged.

May be a little over propped.

Robert: You may be a little over propped with a 15 x 11 3 blade. Get another opinion before you launch the boat. I would think that a 15 x 10 or 15 x 9 may be a better fit. It is not very expensive to repitch, but you will probably need another pull. Good Luck, hope this all works out.
