" In many instances West Coast sailors have a more benign envionment than their east coast counterparts, at least off the California coast. This is in part due to the capability of surface heating from an upstream land mass to alter the atmosphere. However, personal experience reminds me of local coastal flooding, wind and seas which affected an assignment ashore and caused my ship in a floating drydock some anxious moments (in addition to destroying a large portion of Santa Monica pier in the late '70s/early '80s."

you dont mention the lovely el nino storms we have that trash the coast regularly every 4 yrs or so-- biggest ones cycle on a 10 yr or so cycle. we are due. mebbe overdue. santa monica pier was nothing. lol. come on down for some play. momma nature will show ye how calm it is here. sail santa barbara channel in a line squall. anchor out at avalon in santana conditions. lol.; (many wrongly call thee winds santa anas--they are santanas.).... nice n calm. you will LOVE it, wont he brian????

dont forget the point conception smooth waters....LOL.;.notorious places are off cali-- so i am glad to know we have such BENIGN conditions.

we have nice benign weather in summer spring and fall. winter is not the benign weather you are used to sailing in here.
we have , in winter, depending on the year, many different kinds of ways 80 mph winds can make your day. never think is calm and peaceful on the sea named for its stillness and calm--is a falsehood that can do you great discomfort.
in el nino and la nina years, all bets are off. last year we suffered 90 + mph winds in a "routine" storm system passing thru. lol.. wanna have more?? hurrycames are just as much fun--we get the 80+ mph winds associated with 50+ ft seas spewing spray--wanna sail?? lol..is nice and peaceful here. come on down. especially in winter. kinda like the north atlantic. let's play.
