Hi all,

We have been making our way south and noticed some difficulty getting NOAA weather radio statements along Long Island and the coast of New Jersey. Is that left over from "Sandy"? The broadcasts are better now that we're in the Chessy.

In Maine, I find the Weather Channel more accurate but they don't have marine conditions, only wind intensity and direction. I have gotten into trouble listening to NOAA.

Ditto here. There are so many better sources of more accurate current conditions and forecasts I use NOAA like :background music" but I don't really pay much attention to their forecasts. Especially when there is ugly weather coming when the forecast is loaded with cautions like "....swim parallel to the beach....wash your children...". :) Useless.

I know that "out there" weather is sketchy. Most of the time, I think it just makes those on board feel better when the background noise of it is pointlessly rambling on, sort of like I'm keeping a tight eye on the weather. Right..

Anyway, weather app's like most things I guess, people just get used to what they've been using. I do. But I like Intellicast, and they've recently added a "boating" page, where the radar is overlaid on nautical charts. Now THAT is relevant.

(And this new wifi range extender has opened another world in being able to obtain this information)..

I noticed WX channel 1 seems to be offline as of recent, but that isn't leftover from Sandy, that's something new. It is the channel that is normally the strongest signal here in LIS, but channel 3 was working fine over the weekend, and the ships radio could faintly pick up 2, although the handheld couldn't at all...

If youre a 'snowbird' heading southwards and have an SSB, the 'best' wx source is to *listen in* to Chris Parker / Caribbean Wx on 4.045 mHz USB starting at ~7:00 AM, monday — saturday.
Although CarribWx is primarily for wx info for passage to 'de islans, mon', once youre below 'Hatteras' you'll often hear boats calling in for detailed weather routing along the SE coast ...

You can find details and 'subscription rates', broadcast times - voice or email - etc. at www.caribwx.com/‎ If youre going to the Caribbean basin or southern GOM, caribwx is *THE* weather routing service. The subscription charges are for seasonal and/or monthly forecasting.

Caribwx provides INDIVIDUAL weather routing ... and is probably HUNDREDS of times more accurate than NOAA. Especially during the fall to winter (and again in spring) 'change over' weather patterns and the 'equinoctal' gales that precede such changes you want ACCURATE forecasting that includes sea state and wave propagation forecasting ... something that NOAA is apparently incapable of providing because of its 'broadscale' forecasting.

Another good Wx source from the web is www.passageweather.com

I find NOAA forecasts at this time of year to be highly inaccurate - probably due to 'interplay' of warm ocean temps. and constantly changing temps of continental air flow meeting at the coast. If you get your weather forecasts 'wrong' at these times of the year, you can have quite some 'interesting fun' on your trip south, especially anywhere near the Cape Hatteras area.

...noaa Weather Radio New York City Remains Out Of Service...

The Noaa Weather Radio Transmitter That Serves The New York City
Metropolitan Area Has Been Causing Radio Frequency Interference On
The U.s. Coast Guard Channel 16 Transmitter For International
Distress...safety And Calling Since Late July.

The New York City Transmitter Broadcasts On A Frequency Of 162.550
Mhz And The U.s.coast Guard Transmitter Broadcasts On A Frequency Of
156.800 Mhz. Other Transmitters...in Very Close Proximity To The Nyc
Transmitter Broadcast On A Frequency Of 168.3 Mhz.

The National Weather Service Is Working With Several U.s. Government
Agencies To Isolate And Resolve This Technical Problem. We Have
Installed A Filter On The Nyc Transmitter...which Reduced...but Did
Not Eliminate This Problem. We Worked With Another Federal Agency
And Oversaw The Installation Of Another Filter...on A Transmitter
Broadcasting Over 168.3 Mhz...which Did Not Further Reduce The Radio
Frequency Interference.

We Continue To Work With The U.s. Coast Guard To Resolve This
Problem And Apologize For The Interruption Of Our Routine Weather
Broadcasts.

...noaa Weather Radio Will Be Placed In Operation To Broadcast
Short Fuse Life Threatening Weather Watches And Warnings...

Note That The Nyc Transmitter Will Be Placed In Operation For The
Issuance Of Short Fuse Life Threatening Weather Watches And
Warnings...such As Tornado...severe Thunderstorm And Flash Flood
Watches And Warnings...to Ensure Dissemination Through The Emergency
Alert System...which Is Carried By The Broadcast Media.

Thanks For Your Patience And For Listening To Noaa Weather Radio.

We Will Periodically Provide You With Updates On The Status Of The

Re: From the Weather.gov website serving NYC

Thanks Rob, I was thinking I needed a new radio since most of the broadcasts had static over them.
