The pump for the toilet is not pulling water into the bowl. I already checked the thru-hull for obstructions and didn't find anything. The head is a "Mansfield Sanitary". Don't know it's age. I've owned the boat for five years and never had a problem before. I poured water from a jug into the bowl and the pump did discharge it into the tank with no problem. So I can get water out just not into the bowl. What is the likelyhood the water intake hose is blocked? Do I need a new pump, whole new head, or is there something else I need to check? Thanks for the help, Joe Mullee 1983 H34 #170

did you remove the hose on the toilet end?

Joe: Have you tried removing the hose on the toilet end yet? If the thru hull is open and that end is loose, water should pour out. If it does, you need to look at replacing the head. They are not worth rebuilding in most cases.

Thanks Steve

I'm heading down tonight and will give that a try. JM

Your toilet is at least 22 years old

And prob'ly considerably older...'cuz the Mansfield brand name disappeared in 1984 when Sealand bought them...and the model name was changed to 751 even before that...and discontinued altogether in about 1986 or 1987. No parts, not even a rebuild kit, have been available for it for at least 15 years. I suspect your problem is simply rubber seals, o-rings and valves that have finally just become totally worn out..some may even have disintegrated by now. So I'm afraid it's time for a new toilet.

Amazed

In that the head is one of the most frequently used and least expensive pieces of equipment on most boats I am often amazed at what some people will do to breath new life into an old head. Genoa a little streached out... buy a new one. New high tech fiber for spinnaker sheets that is 1/32 of an ounce lighter and exibits .0002% less stretch... better get those. Newest hottest GPS hit the market... buy one. 20 year old head go bad... spend the weekend with your hands covered with s--- and save a coulpe hundred bucks. I don't get it?

Hey...I can appreciate sentimental attachment...

So here's what to do: After you've replaced it, you clean it up. You google for some inspirational words for a dear departed friend. Invite all your friends, buy some VERY beer (it MUST be beer!) and munchies...and go out to deep water...bury it at sea with all the respect it deserves. After all, it has shared not only your most private moments, but those of every owner of your boat since it was built. It DESERVES a decent burial. Afterward, you and your friends drink the beer and "baptize" its worthy successor. What better end could any marine toilet ask for? (None of the above applies to any Jabsco toilet made after 1990...the only place they belong is in a dumpster!).

pump seals may be bad

I had the same problem on my Cal 28 I just bought. The seals were bad in the pump, not shutting off one way when pumping the other way. For $180, I just replaced the whole toilet and pump. The pump alone would have been $140. Good luck.

Sounds Like A New Head Is In Order

I'll give Steves idea a try. If the lines aren't clogged I guess I'm gonna get a new throne. Thanks for the help. Joe Mullee

I like my Jabsco (1995) and I also liked the 2 Jabscos on the 2002 40CC I chartred in the BVI recently. Water pumped in, stuff pumped out, what more do you need? Bill

What more do you need?

How 'bout a toilet that'll last more than a year without a failure. The toilets Jabsco built 10-15 years ago were decent quality for the money, but the ones they've made in the last 6-7 years are so flimsy they don't even last a year. Several boat builders have stopped using 'em because they had to replace so many under warranty that it costs 'em less to go with a more expensive toilet. Some owners just replace the pump every year as preventive maintenance--charter companies even more often--but that doesn't make much sense IMO...in 3 years they've spent more to keep a $100 toilet working than the price of a Raritan PH II (about $250...rated the best toilet under $500 for decades) that'll be trouble-free for at least 20 years if it's just kept lubricated and rebuilt every 5-6 years.

Fresh Water

Depending on how you sail you could just always just use fresh water to fill the bowl and then pump it out. I keep my boat on a lake in a slip and we never pump in the lake water. We always fill the bowl with fresh water. Jason

Peggy, I quite agree with

you. I installed a Raritan when I refitted Bietzpadlin. I have been impressed with the abuse the system will take with just a little care.
