Oday Day Sailer 16' New Bern, NC
I am in the process of re-commissioning a 1997 16' Day Sailer, that has not
been sailed for about 18 mo. according to the owner who is now out of the
US.

Got the boat off the trailer and tried to get the centerboard down.

There is a metal handle about 8 inches long on the stbd side of the center
board enclosure. I cannot move it either forward or sternward. Is there
a locking mechanism? I do not see any control lines. Which way should I
apply pressure to lower the board? Dare I add a extension pipe on the
handle?

Any suggestions are very welcome.

I have a DS 1 which uses a handle. The handles are cast metal and probably can't take much strain. Try removing handle and dropping centerboard out of the trunk for inspection. Boat should be on its side or up on sawhorses.

There might be a little "pawl" that holds the CB up, (not all O'DAY boats with the lever-operated CBs had them). To lower CB, first move lever slightly forward, flip the pawl out of the way, then CB should lower. I have seen these pawls, but my old WIDGEON didn't have one, neither did my Dad's Beetle Falcon (near sister-ship to the O'DAY Osprey), so I understand the use, but have never used one.

One nice thing about these lever-operated CBs, removing the CB is easy; remove the 3 screws that hold the triangular plate in place, pull the lever out, and THUMP... the CB will drop out......well, it should, but might be wedged by dirt/fouling.
