NO STEP on hatch cover slide

My used H-240(year 2000, bought by me 2004) has a sign on the hatch cover slide that says: "NO STEP". Is this on all H-240s or did the prior owner put it there? It would be nice to step right there while reefing or furling the main. Is there an allowable weight limit for standing on the hatch cover? Has anyone made a unit to slide in that area that would support the weight but could be removed when not needed? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. George

Take heed!

The warning was on my boat when it came new from the factory. It means what it says. Several years ago I was sitting on the deck space between the winch and the sliding hatch. One of my buns put a little too much pressure on the hatch and CRACK! Something in the neighborhood of $150 later, with my doing all the work of re-drilling the holes and re-installing the teak trim pieces, I was back in business, almost as good as new. Believe me, it will not support much weight.

Mine too

My sticker came from the factory - I haven't tested whether it belongs there or not - I stand on the pop-up cover routinely when furling/reefing - no problems there at all. You could probably cut a piece of plywood to fit over the slider, supported by the companionway, but seems like more trouble than it's worth. Good luck, Drew

Thanks Dale

Dale, many thanks! You probably saved me $150 and a lot of work. Now can we find among us an engineer that will design an easy to make, probably folding, unit that we can pop in there for heavy weather sailing. It could have pivoting aluminum angle irons that would swing across when unfolded and dropped in place. They would give plenty of support. Maybe we can get Hunter to design it and sell it. Anyhow thanks a lot. George

Yikes

I love my 240, but, you will be in one heck of a situation if you need to protect the slider from breaking waves! I think I'd be turtled before the glass broke....

for my foot not to stop water

Drew I am not concerned about water, I just want something I can step on when furling or reefing the sail.

Regarding the Cabin Top

What I noticed on my H260 was that the white, fiberglass top was begining to sag from the constant stepping on. Then, when you push the clear/plastic slider forward it was getting scratched by the saging white fiberglass cabin roof. I have subsequently raised the white fiberglass cabin pop top roof and no longer put any weight on it but I still have to live with the scratches. What I do now is when furling the main sail I try to keep the boat a little off the wind so the boom is not directly aligned with the centerline of the boat but is positioned over the left or right side of the cabin.
