I recently purchased another H34 and would like to paint the non-skid area a gray color. Should I use the gray paint from West Marine and add the no-skid additive as they only come in quart cans that can get a little pricey. Any suggestions on an alternate economical type of paint?

A quart can go a surprisingly long way...
I did two coats on my 27 with one quart of Pettit's Easypoxy plus satin additive and skidless compound (bought at West Marine) and still had some paint left over. Any residual shine will be "chalked out" by the sun's UV rays and a couple of washings. I used a good quality brush to cut in against the masked edges and corners, and a thin 6" white foam roller (from any hardware store)to roll on a consistent even coat which left no marks whatsoever. It will be worth a couple of quarts of good paint to have a professional looking job that will last for a while.

What's the best time of year or day to apply
George, Living down here on the Gulf does it matter what type of humidity is present prior to applying or as long as I keep a wet tip it should flow allright? Thanks

I painted the deck of my H33 a couple years ago. I used Interlux Brightside One-Part Polyurethane, 2 coats, rolled and brushed. The second coat I added the Brightside Flattening Agent and the Interlux Non-Skid additive. The Seattle Gray color matched the original gray pretty well, and the paint has held up wonderfully. Hi Michael: I rebuilt a 20' open fisherman,and on the deck, I used a generic (Home Depot best)porch and deck semigloss enamel. I mixed the non skid additive in (microballons) and rolled it on (keep stirring). The rolling gave me a nice pattern and the nonskid gave me a good grip. It's been on now for 3 yrs. Still looks good,no flaking. As in all painting , preparation and cleanliness is the key to a good job. Good luck red

Interlux Matterhorn White
Michael, I too used Interlux Brightsides paint and nonskid additive. Worked very well, but plan on at least two coats, three if you can stand the boredom. If you want to match the Kenyon spar color, Interlux Matterhorn White is almost exact -- less blue than Seattle gray.

Eric and Ken, unclear about. . . .
your non-skid. Did you paint the entire deck or just the non-skid portion? Did you mask toerails, handrails, dorades, etc.? What does everyone think of getting away from the two-tone, going with ALL white?

Interlux is also an excellent product.
All white could be a bit "blinding" with the sun overhead? I mask everything off, and paint only the nonskid areas - I like the look better. However, like anything else, it's ultimately a matter of preference.

Like George said, the all white, especially here in the Gulf is blinding and I really like the look of the grey. I've got my masking tape, my small brush to start and my 6 inch roller to make headway. Plan to start tomorrow morning, once its down I'll post some pictures, once again thanks for all the advice.

Good luck Michael on your task. To answer your previous question; I only painted the non-skid areas, masking off most of the rest. I think that I will put another coat on the sole of the cockpit next spring, and touch up those areas that I have caused the paint to come off where I have rubbed the whisker pole or have let the jib sheet blocks rub the painted area. Watch Out!!!
My 83 H34 has Navy Blue on the nonskid on the cabin top and gray in the main walking area. Any time the sun is out, you can't touch it much less walk on it it is so hot. Down below in the v-berth, on a nice day, the ceiling will be anywhere from 100-150+ degrees radiating in the cabin. So, hot my 16,500btu Mermaid Air unit can't even keep up and it's IN the v-berth sucking that hot air in. White decks in the near future for me! Richie Mahoney s/v ComMonday
