Hello everyone, I have a Yanmar 34hp. The rev gear sometimes will engage, sometimes not. Moving the gear lever on the tranny by hand, without the control cable attached, I get a clear clunk when going in to forward, the same when going into neutral but then nothing when moving the arm to reverse. There is actually no feel at all when moving the level to the rev position. In forward and neutral, there is a clear resistance, then the gear change/clunk. Any suggestions of what is wrong in tranny? Thanks. Paul

Another question...

I read that there is no feel of a clunk engaging reverse. Does the shaft turn after moving the lever to reverse? Do you have the KM2 or KM3 trans? Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Buford, Ga imd_ga@hotmail.com

Hi Pat, No the shaft does not turn when I put it into the rev position. Occassionally she will slip into rev if I am lucky, but most times not. When she does slip into rev, there maybe a very slight engagement felt, but never like the positive feeling of putting it into N or F. We just bought the boat and initially thought it was a problem with the linkage adjustment, but apparently not. I do not know the model of the tranny. I'll have to check this weekend. The engine is 1990 vintage if that helps. Someone thought it might be the "cone" was bad? What are your thoughts? Paul

Possibly a trans adjustment

It might only require an adjustment. I'd have a qualified mechanic take a look. It may be worth "biting the bullet" and have it fixed now rather than hassle with it in close quarters and causing damage that will be more expensive.
