I just bought a used '96 Johnson Long Shaft for my Catalina 27. Everything was fine until I put it into reverse today to back into my slip and had practically NO POWER. I almost clobbered the boats across the way! Finally it slowed to a stop and creeped back into my slip. I had a very old Mercury 9.9 which worked fine in forward and reverse. Forward, the Johnson has plenty of power. Someone said I should adjust the angle so that the propeller is further out from the stern and rudder. Has anyone had this problem? Is it the prop? HELP!

whats the prop doing whioe you are in reverse

Be impossible to tell whether the trannie is slipping, or the prop just isn't getting a good bite, without watching it. Also you would need to tell someone whether you are getting rpms or not. Without more info, you might as well as a tarot reader..... IJ

Testing

Rose, I wrote here last night but it was corrupted for some reason along with some other threads. Anyway, I know most outboard need an exhaust diverter when used in sailboats so the exhaust isn't sent to the standard exit of the prop hub. That causes NO reverse. The prop is running in air then, not water.

exhaust diverter for Johnson 9.9

Thanks for the info. How do I get an exhaust diverter so I can have more power in reverse. I don't know why my ancient Mercury had plenty of reverse power as did two Evinrudes. I would think Johnson would be very similar to Evinrude. Thanks to whatever help you can offer.

An old friend ordered a new Johnson for his

sailboat. (15hp long shaft) He had to order the diverter system from the dealer. It made the engine louder but it backed up. That was in the '70s. I can't help with todays outboards except that I don't think they back up any better with exhaust through the hub. Pick up the phone. The dealer should know.

Had the same problem...

Rose, I had the same issue with a Johnson 7.5 on an O'Day 23. I replaced the standard prop with a lower pitch "high thrust" prop and the difference was like night & day! Typically these engines have three different prop pitches available, "high thrust", "standard", and "high speed". The pitch is lowest on the "high thrust" and highest on the "high speed". The high thrust prop has symmetrical blades and gives MUCH more thrust in reverse but sacrifices very little in forward. Go with the low pitch prop and reverse with confidence! Low pitch=Reverse power...Thanks.

Thanks so much for your help. I ordered the high thrust prop this morning (10x7). Is this what you have? Also, is there any problem removing and re-nstalling the prop? Do you need a special wrench. Thanks again!
