Shore power will feed your 120V receptacles, charger, etc. Not your lights directly which will always be 12V. To this end you need your batteries on and if you want you can replenish via shore power.

Your inverter allows you to supply 120V in a similar way but will be limited in terms of load that it can handle. You shouldn't be able to have both shore and inverter on at the same time but not sure of exact setup.

Cool_Change is correct, almost all the gear that you would use while sailing is 12 volt. you can run it while shore power is plugged in by turning on the battery charger, it runs off 120 AC and converts it to 12 volts DC to charge the batterise. If you turn on 12 volt equipment it will see the load and come on to keep the batteries charged.
You will want to check out the shore power/inverter setup as having them both on at the same time is dangerouse if your boat does not have a transfer switch. A transfer switch controls which source (shore power or inverter) powers the 120 volt circuits. Depending on how the transfer switch is set up it may be possible to have the inverter and the battery charger on at the same time. While it will not hurt anything having it wired this way you do not ever want to do that. The inverter sucks current from the batteries converts it to 120 AC and the charger uses that 120 to make 12 volts and charge the batteries. A great way to discharge your batteries in fairly short order. you should also check to see if the inverter can power the hot water heater. You do not want to ever do that either.
