You can get a shorter jib and have it clear the railing. I think the idea of the ones that hit the rail is to get a larger sail area. When close hauled, with the jib is sheeted tight, it's behind the rail. That said, with the jib on a furler it's tack (bottom front corner) is pretty high anyway.Peter.

Nothing is perfect on a boat :) Yes, if you get the angle of the furling line at right angles to the drum, and keep a slight bit of tension on the line when you unfurl the sail, it usually coils up neatly enough not to be a problem. The install manual, which you should have got from the installer, explains it well. What size headstay are people using with the Furlex on Vegas? The math says 3/16" is overkill but I like the security. Lyric has twin 3/16" headstays but as I age the thought of going on the foredeck gets less appealing! Price jumps significantly going from 3/16" to 1/4". I haven't had any problem with my furlex furler either. Tim

The Furlex kit comes supplied with a 3/16" (5mm)
replacement headstay. I guess, when ordering, you could specify a
heavier stay if you were planning on beefing up the rigging. There
has been conciderable discussion on this list as to whether that is a good idea
or not.

I don't think 3/16 is overkill. To the best of my knowledge the original Vega rigging is 5 mm which is slightly larger than 3/16". Peter

Peter, When I replaced Lyric's standing rigging Judy was working for West Marine and we got a very good discount. We went with the Dyform wire and Sta-Loks top and bottom. The difference in price even with the discount saved us hundreds of dollars. (Defender's 2014 catalog shows a price difference of $12.00 between 3/16" and 1/4" Sta-Lok eye terminals and a difference of $17.00 for the fork terminals.) David Gerr in "The Nature of Boats" gives the formula for calculating wire size and it came out to 1/8" for Vega's. This led me to believe that there was no reason to go up a size to 1/4" as the designers had chosen to use oversize wire. I just went to Amazon and ordered a copy and will give the formula when I get the book. Great book by the way and I highly recommend it. I have no idea where my old copy went. When rigging fails it usually seems to be the forestay which led me to convert to twin forestays. Online pricing between 3/16" and 1/4" inch Furlexs shows a difference of $772.00 for the best price I found. I did go to 1/4" on the backstay as I wanted to get a SSB radio and the smallest insulated Sta-Lok terminals were 1/4". Never did get around to installing the SSB. I agree .... 1/4" wire on a Vega would be extreme overkill. My AlbinBallad 30 has 6mm wire (just under 1/4") with a 41' mast. You're right ... when you go one size up everything gets more expensive!Peter
