A friend of mine has recently purchased an '89 Pearson 27, A great design and in aparrently good condition. To my amazement he has no intention of giving a proper name to the boat. The two previous owners had never named the boat either! I later learned that my friend had not even named his previous boat!!! After a couple of months he has had more than the usual amount of problems and just plain bad luck with this boat. I think it is "just not right" to not give a boat a name! What do you think?

How would You Like It If??

Just imagine not naming your child. Everyone would just be calling "Hey You". Maybe he should call it that!!

Important reasons to name a boat

Imagine: (Your friend): "Mayday, mayday, mayday...this a Pearson 31 sailboat with a white hull and white sails 2 miles off Rocky Point, taking on water...btw, there's also a regatta going on out here, so there are at least 2 dozen other white sailboats with white sails approximately 30' out here too." (CG): "31' Pearson, are all crew and passengers wearing PFDs?" (3 racing Pearson 31s): "Um...CG, why do you ask?" Etc. Or, on a happier note: (You, on your way to join him in a cove, but not sure which one, so you're hailing him for directions): "31 Pearson out of SailboatsOnlyMarinaWith300Slips Marina, Annapolis...Seascape calling"... That oughta get you at least 10 replies! Boats NEED names. In fact, the CG requires it for documentation.

If my boat had no name that was displayed,

and if all my friends and neighbors were asked the name of my boat, they would probably say: I think is was, 1. "Son of a b****", or 2. "Something about a mother....", or, 3. "You dirty little "whatever", or 4. "You stupid SOB", and at that point I would say "yes, can I help you". Name the boat or too many of us will respond when hailed. Ray sv Speedy

He's Jinxing the Boat

Imaging having a one year old kid with no name! What about a pooch? The thought of it makes my laugh aloud. Urge your friend to name the boat, if not for safety reason, then encourage him to do it so that the jinx can be removed. Maybe when his boat finally assumes its new identify, your friend's luck will change. "Exquisite Delight" Balboa 22'
