I did something like this once when I was converting from two 12 volt batteries to two 12 volt banks made from 6 volt batteries. I didn't have time to make proper gauge battery cables to connect them together so I paralleled thinner gauge auto battery cables I got at the local auto store. I also had to make one positive extension cable that way because a battery post was to far to pull the original cable to on one of the battery banks.

It did look a little bit cleaner than this but it's still not something I'd brag about.

But fresh water doesn't conduct electricity the same way salt water does, so the wiring was probably safer there. That's why he didn't mention it.
