I'm looking at purchasing a 361 Beneteau. The HIN number does not appear on the aft starboard side, but on the aft port side, there is a 3 digit number, 166. Can anyone shed any light on the reason why this hull doesn't have the normal numbers. On the plate in the cockpit, it says that the Builder is Beneteau SA. It's Cat A CE0607. And then there is an address in France.

Where is it located?

The only # is 166? No other numbers? Where are you located? Where is the boat located? Is there a chance it's a French built boat that was brought over to the US? Your right in that it does not match the pattern for marking hulls on US built boats. Mine is on the STBD quarter and has a long string of letters and numbers. I suspect that it may be French built. I seem to recall they have a much simpler hull numbering process. If in doubt I'd call Beneteau in South Carolina.

we have a 361 built in France

Bing, we have a French 361 built in St Hilaire, France (according to the paperwork). Our hull number is on the stbd side and no registration number when I purchased, we put those on ourselves according to the coastguard rules. Can't add to the question about the hull # and when ours was put on but its french and still has it. All other aspects of the boat is US including the mast and 110 electrical, there are many european components but the US might have the same ones.
