Not It

Just drained the transmission oil. 6 oz came out, capacity is 10 oz (.3 liter). Was a little dark in a container, but looks clear on a dipstick, so its in good health. Doesn't appear to be cause of major damage, or cause of not going into gear.

his tranny ran dry --he ran it sans oil for a few miles.....
I'm not familiar with this boat, but that was my initial reaction as well. When our "reversing gear" ran low on fluid, we encountered the same problem, except that we noticed that the engine was periodically reving as the gear slipped (Borg-Warner Velvet Drive).

What, no "Tranny" in boats?

Many times, regardless of the type of transmission (note that i didn't call it a "tranny"!:))
Technically, isn't it really called a "marine gear" or "reversing gear" in marine applications? I'm sure that is old terminology. I suppose there might be some boats that actually have multiple forward gears...

Technically, the "mission" of a transmission is to "transmit" power thru geared (or hydraulic) couplings...

Whether they are FNR or multiple speeds forward or even HNL it is a transmission....

(or tranny for short) all part of the "drive train"
