I think you are right about that.... I did a search for heavy duty white UV protected poly tarp and found this one...
http://www.maxtool.com/tarps/products/W012020.asp?cagpspn=pla&gclid=CKODwNzYgLICFcXb4Aod0HYAcw
It is only $31... and it would be the high end of the poly tarp scale.
I wonder if I could make a spinnaker with one of these? I want one but i won't likely get the admirals permission.
This of course, out of my ignorance, creates a few questions. My mast which is, as many of you know, a "Franken-mast". It's 26.5 feet tall. I use a MacGregor jib size and a custom or Clipper Marine" sized main. Originally it was a full masthead set up and when I put It it on the Mac, I made it a fractional rig using the mac forestay and jib halyard. So 1. My mast doesn't have as much mast above the forestay and 2. I still have 2 halyards at the top. (one is a spare and can be used as a topping lift).
Can I use this halyard to raise a spinnaker if I have a shackle on both ends?
If I do use a spinnaker, do I need an extra set of sheets or does one use the jib sheets? (I never used one) I assume spinnaker sheets will go outside the shrouds.
Do I need an additional forestay or will it just get in the way?
How long is the spinnaker pole? (I have an eye on the front of my mast for a whisker or spinnaker pole).
What would the dimensions be for a spinnaker?
