Thank you for info and not lol. Sailboat cost me nothing and I make my sails out of poly tarps. The old story is momma wanted a pontoon but I got a "free" boat instead so she watches every dollar I spend on this project. Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
The forward hatch on my Oday 222 is a POS. I would NOT want to accidently step on it for fear it would implode inward. But I dont know as I would want to use an RV vent either, at least the one I have I can crawl through. Maybe watch eBay or poke around some salvage sites to find a replacement. Alternatively, you could probably make one. Maybe a wooden latticework with a poly covering that snaps down over the hole?? I mean, as long as your going for $zero investment, see what else you can come up with.

She says sailing is too much work. Rather sit in lounge chair with a drink in one hand and her kindle in other... And not switch sides......what can a man do? Oh yea worry about sailing not the wife....if she sees this we are all in trouble. Thanks for the info, keep it coming
I have the origional front hatch and about a 24" square section of the deck where the hatch was from my m25. I put in a large Nibro hatch that I could easily get my old bones thru. If you want it it is yours for the shipping. PM me with your address, and your email, and I send you some pictures.

There was a site I found once that sold kits to make sails from poly tarp material. White poly could look okay.
Don't know about Bilsheryl, but I have successfully made sails for Boy Scout canoes out of blue tarp material- no sewing, just fold over double-sided carpet tape. -Paul

I think this is very cool. A person can build a very economical cartopper sailboat, like the Puddle Duck Racer (PDR), but get blown out of the water ($$) when it comes to putting sails on her. With the homemade sails, many more people can afford to "get out there!"

bilsheryl, don't think anyone is picking on your tarp sails. Actually, you should be lauded for your ingenuity! Will an RV hatch work... YEP! Sorry I'll be the only one to say it.
It's waterproof, and it'll hold up just fine. My brother owns a Newport 17 (great little boat), no worries, it ain't the sails slowing you down, I swear that boat ain't happy until it's blowing a gale! Him and I took her out in 24-30mph winds stood her up on her ear, and still couldn't bury the rail! I am told the next step is rolling it, but to me it seems that's pretty hard to do.
Free means you have lost nothing if something goes wrong. I am good with that!
That cabin is small/tight on these, but usable, so any air is good air, so an RV vent should do you just find. Obviously a boatyard used hatch is probably going to be better, but you also don't want to cut a 18x18 hole in that foredeck either, it's pretty structural to that boat.
