My 340 was comissioned back in February and from the beginning I had trouble with the Cold Machine going off for no obvious reason. Kenyon sent me a new electronic module and when installed cured the problem. However, I have noticed that the cooling (exhaust)fan never cycles on. The unit doesn't seem to get overly hot but I am concerned that the lack of cooling will hurt the unit over time. What to do?

Check your batteries

Johnnie, I had, what sounds like, a similar problem. Here is what I learned: 1. The Adler Barbour Cold Machine fan and compressor cycles on and off for no apparent reason. It seems like the fan stalls out and just won't get the machine cooling. 2. I called A/B and they suggested that I check the voltage at the panal and at the compressor to see if there was any significant voltage drop. There wasn't. 3. They suggested I check my batteries. Sure enough, my cells were weak, some not more than 25% of full strength. 4. I replaced the batteries. The A/B CM ran just fine. 5. We leave the A/B running during the week. Within a month I had the same problem. Tested and checked the batteries. Bad again. 6. Called Guest on the battery charger. I had a model 2830. They (Guest) told me that this model was not designed to properly charge the batteries for the type of load or use I was putting on them. Go figure! (Shame on Hunter, Guest and my dealer for even putting this piece of junk on my boat. While I didn't know better, they sure should have!) However, Guest suggested I buy a new Guest Model 2830A. No thanks! Got burned once --- not going there again. 7. I did some research and found that Newmar makes a "first class" charger. I found their site on the net at www.newmarpower.com. Follow the prompts to Marine lead acid chargers. Look at the PT-20CE. Call them, number on the site, and ask for Mac in customer support. He will help you select the proper size for your batteries and your boat. 8. I then shopped the net to find the lowest price and purchased it from www.marinewarehouse.net. I think I paid $475. They were terrific to work with, also. 9. Installed the charger and new batteries. $190 for new batteries again. Problem is now solved. Bottom line for 340 owners. If you have a Guest Model 2830 charger it is a dud. Get past it. I am VERY impressed with Newmar. Guest is a cheap plastic case --- Newmar is a polished chrome case. Newmar has a cooing fan. Guest does not. The Guest charger pulls the A/C power through your batteries and to your D/C load. The Newmar pulls the A/C from your shorepower, conditions it and sends it DIRECTLY to your D/C load BYPASSING THE BATTERIES as long as the draw does not exceed 20 AMPS. Over 20 AMPS the batteries kick in. Sounds like that will save LOTS of wear and tear on the batteries. As you can tell I am very impressed with the high quality of the Newmar charger. Hope this helps you. Wynn Ferrel S/V Tranquility

One more thing....

I left out two important points. What the Guest Model 2830 battery charger is doing is "boiling" the water out of the batteries, because it is getting "fooled" into fast-charging the batteries for too long a period of time, and not transitioning into the float mode properly. This is otherwise known as "frying the batteries," or "sulfating the plates." Wiser minds might have a more technical description of this situation, but this is what I have gleened after talking to the customer support people at both Guest and Newmar. And lastly, I read with some interest on this forum in another thread, where another 340 owner had a similar problem and replaced his Guest Model 2830 charger with a Model 2833 and reports that he is pleased with the 2833. If you can, I would suggest trying to look at a Newmar first hand. Only then can you really appreciate the quality of this piece equipment. It is all the difference between a Timex and a Rolex. I am very pleased with my Hunter 340. But, I like quality equipment. It is cheaper in the long run, IMHO. Best wishes, Wynn Ferrel S/V Tranquility H340

Newmar RM-20

Has Hunter ever used Newmar chargers on any boats as stock equipment? My 1989 H30 has a Newmar RM-20 (model no longer listed on Newmar's Web site), and I'm wondering if it has the same quality as the current Newmar models, and if a previous owner installed it or if it was standard equipment. Thanks, Bob England

Fan

Check the wiring for the fan to be sure they are properly placed into the module. This is not easy as the connections are sometime in a difficult position to see. The fan is supposed to cycle on and off with the compressor.
