Thanks for all the info on the compression post problem. This weekend we took out the door and trim on the post and nugged it out half way. Except for a nasty musty smell that appeared when first pulled the trim piece away from the post everyting was bone dry. We then pulled tha mast base off and got rid of all the old caulk in the PVC tube. Since everthing is out in the open I think Ill add a another wire for a combo deck light/running light and then put everything back together. Windswept 1984

Potential Compression Problem

Since you have everything opened up on your boat, you may want to drill a 1/2" hole in the fiberglass beam where it would be hidden again by the teak door jamb. That way you could shine a flashlight from underneath where the compression post goes and inspect the wooden support inside the fiberglass beam. You should be able to see quite a bit by peeking through that hole. The wooden crossmember is notched out there so it should be a large void behind the fiberglass. The fact that you smelled something musty may be an indication that something is happening to that piece of wood inside the overhead. Regards, Allan "Alchemie" '85 H34 SF Bay
