I have a Zodiac Dingy that came with my boat when I boat it. I want to put a motor on it, and Florida requires registration. To register it they say I need a Certificate of Origin or sales reciept, I have neither. They did look up the hull ID and it has never been registered. Zodiac says they cannot help, it was never registered with them either. Any advise?

Paperwork Options

There is a lot of variation regarding registration of a dingy/tender depending on your location. If they mother ship is documented the USCG has rules about tenders and they don't need to be registered. Some states use variations of the mother ship registration numbers and add a -1 to the end. other options: A state registration is very easy to get in some states using only a hand written bill of sale because the dingy is small. Identify one you have a friend or relative in, have them register it will a bill of sale from you and then buy it back when the paperwork arrives (I've done this with cars) Have someone write you a bill of sale (even though they never owned it). Where did you get it? dealer or private? have them give you a bill of sale. Was it included in the inventory when you bought the sailboat? Show them that paperwork. Be creative as long as it ain't hot and no one is looking for it.

I went through the same thing with two dinks. One, I purchased from WM, but did not get a certificate of Origin and didn't need it since it was a rowboat. Same for the other purchased off e-bay. WM gave me a bill of sale and the prior owner of the inflatable gave me a bill of sale and then I went to a second DMV and explained exactly what I wanted, what I had, and how I could get nothing more. She handled it. At the end of the day, they just want their tax. Good luck, keep at it. Rick D.

TC, you have a bill of sale for your Zodiak...

You said the Zodiak came with your boat when you bought it. That is your bill of sale. I'm assuming you paid tax on the purchase. Why pay it again? Our surveyor itemized all the major items that came with the purchase of our boat; dingy, outboard motor, etc. In Washington as long as the dingy is a part of the boat you do not need to register it. Certain rules do apply to its use, however. Terry
