I have an oportunity to pick up a Hunter 23 boat, motor and trailer for the best possible price $0.00. It is no beauty and must be as old as my 1986 Catalina 22. The boat hasn't been in the water for more than two years. It is a swing keel version but,it is in an area where the 3ft + draft would make launching difficult. The mast appears to be painted, not anodized. There is some blistering of this paint near attachment holes in the mast. I have a place to keep the boat where it can be kept with the mast up on the trainer and easily launched. What would make this deal a waste of time?

Deal Breaker...

...check the hull below the waterline for any really big holes - if none, take the boat! Drew

Go for it

The Hunter 23 is a great solid boat. I just purchased a 1985 model (although I paid a lot more than you!) and am in the process of feverishly rebuilding it so I can use it this year. I'm learning as I go but am keeping an online journal that you might find interesting at http://www.teamseacats.com/hunter/ Regards, Jake

Trailer wheels

Thanks all for your posts. I will make sure of clear title before investing anything. Jake, your web page is awesome! Can you or anyone post the trailer wheel lug seperation so that I can determine the bold hole diameter. I know the diameter could be 4.5 or 5.0 inches. The lugs are 2 3/8 inches apart for 4.5 and 3.0 inches apart for 5.0 diameter. I have decided, if all is as expected, the boat will be in my possesion by next week end.

Trailer Lug patterns

I wrestled with this problem for a long time. I upgraded the hubs on the trailer to a 5 bolt pattern on a 4.5" diameter circle (5 on 4.5"). I don't think the bolt pattern that was previously on the trailer would have been that difficult to match (according to the previous owner it was) but I think it was 5 on 5" (not sure). If it was 5 on 5" it would have been simple to match as most older GM cars had this pattern. Here's a great reference that solved a lot of my problems and made the search for new wheels very easy: http://www.mrt-wheels.com/boltpatternref.html

Great web updates!

Jake, I just had to add, I love your web updates on your H23. You are my inspiration, I have already noticed two things I needed to check on my '86 Hunter 23 from your photos. Keep up the good work and keep us posted.
