Why does the hunter 27 1979 not have a boom vang? It is equiped with a cabin top traveler. Is this common for 75-84 27Hs?

None did. . . .

that I have studied. The early boats just were not equipped that way. I added a Garhauer vang to my 1979 H37C, mostly so that I would have a ready preventer. Sail shape is not so important to me as knocking someone over the side with the boom. Pretty sure that mid-boom sheeting is an owner upgrade on your boat. Is there room for a vang?

Get one

Gary, I added a Garhauer Rigid Vang(~$190)and it made a huge difference. The rigid also eliminates the topping lift. You will still need a preventer though, as the rigid vang is permanently attached. Do you have any photos of your traveler? I'm getting ready to move mine to the cabin top, and would like to know how it looks, in the way, etc. Bruce

Just added a vang to my '77 h27

It's a little tight but works fine. Used bales on the boom and mast to mount a rope fall. Like Ed I wanted the preventer for cruising reaches and runs. Helps to keep the main out of the shrouds when the sheet is eased way out. Of course it also prevents an accidental gybe. Watch out that you don't drill into the mast step. (I did, but repair wasn't hard.)
