Does anyone have or use a Magellan handheld GPS receiver connected to a VHF transciever via the NMEA RCA connection for the purpose of sending time and latitude/longitude to the VHF? If so, on the 12 volt power side, what color wire is positive and which is negatine? On the data side, there are three wires that normally would be connected to a serial connector. However, the NMEA connection is a two-lead RCA-type. Thales Magellan is too slow to answer.

Which model Magellan?

I have two Magellan GPS units. One is old and one is new. Neither use an RCA type connector for data. Both units have manuals with pin-out information for data and power, and also available on-line at their web site. You might also mention the brand and model VHF transceiver you are interfacing.

Just did it...

this weekend, I connected a Magellan GPS 315 handheld to a Standard Horizon Intrepid +, it works great. I have an external power power cable connected to the GPS, I added a 3rd. contact point to the #4 contact point. The back of the GPS has 4 contact points: (from left to right in a clockwise direction looking at the back of the GPS) #1 DBR data IN + #2 Power + #3 Ground - #4 NMEA data OUT + I connected #4(GPS) to the NMEA IN (+) (blue on my radio), and the ground to the NMEA IN (-) (green on my radio). I don't know what radio you have so will have to check the manual for the particular cables. Next go to the setup menu in the GPS and select 2.1 under the NMEA setup, and a baud rate of 4800. Make sure the connections are good between the GPS contact pads and the cable. Ozana
