We are making the trip from Atlantic City, NJ to Block Island (direct ocean route) and was looking for information about debris in the water. Has anyone seen or heard any reports about debris left over from Sandy?

I made the trip from Cape May to Rhode Island, and sailed past Block Island, about 2 years ago. We actually saw a couple logs in the water back then. However; the biggest danger was from all the fishing boats. Those people are focused on their business, and not on other vessels so much. We were almost run down about 2am off New York. We tangled with another fishing boat near Block Island, as well as a tug towing barges.
Keep a look out round the clock, and stay well clear of fishing boats dragging nets or lines.
On the other hand; we saw lots of dolphins, turtles and whales.

We've made the trip several times. All the fishing boats we saw were lit up like Christmas trees so they were hard to miss. I've heard some rumors, nothing confirmed, about debris left over from Sandy. It's hard to believe it would still be out there.
We had some friends from down here with a Hunter 50 sail direct from Cape May to Block Island last month. They did not mention any flotsom & jetsom from Sandy. They returned via the East River, Hell's Gate and NY Harbor then proceeded down the coast to Atlantic City. Again, no mention of debris in the water.

I don't know if you've made this trip before, but other than commercial boats, in the 4 times I've made it I've never seen another boat. You are pretty much on your own. The over night portion is the concern; the watch is not going to see anything in the water.
Years ago I spent a lot of time fishing off the south shore of LI. At that time there was all kinds of debris out there - most of it dumped off freighters heading to NY ports. I suppose rules have changed that, but it wasn't and still isn't a good idea to fly through those waters. I can't tell you how many telephone poles I've seen and one we ran over. The good thing is you will likely be going 7 kts. or under and with a watch have time to avoid debris.
You should however keep a fishing pole rigged with a buck tail or tin to troll by crates, skids etc. where it's likely in the summer you'll find a dolphin (Mahi Mahi, Dorado etc).
We caught plenty out there. There is little more exciting than seeing a streak come out from under a crate and hit your lure.
So if you see some flotsam, by all means don't hit it, but don't miss it by too much because dinner could be lurking under it.
