I can't figure why this season the motor seems to leak a little oil into the casing. I replaced and snugged the fuel filter and replaced spark plugs and snugged them. Nothing seems to be coming from either of those places. The oil seems to be primarily located in the aft section on the bottom of the case. Of course, I'm worried about a motor fire. Anybody have a suggestion where I should look? Many thanks.

2 stroke outboards

Rich, I am hoping for more input. However, I have never owned a 2 stroke that didn't have junk built up under the cover. Some, it was from the choking of the carb (in the front of the motor). Others it was a blow thru from the shaft ( this showed up in the rear.) It could be that the tilt or trim of your motor causes build up to show up behind the motor. I know I did alot of talking around but I hope this helps you evaluate your situation. With out seeing it, this is hard to evaluate. r.w.landau

Question clarification

The motor is pretty much vertical except when I have it tilted up, of course, which is 99% of the time (I keep it out of the water). I do have to choke the carb when starting the first time of the day. I never considered it coming from the gear casing. I'll check that. I guess this might be a job for someone who knows what they are doing... I thank you for your ideas!

Rich, I think you just answered it.

When you tilt the motor the carb float opens and allows more fuel into the carb. My guess is it is running out of the front of the carb. r.w.landau

That would be a problem!

RW, If such is the case, that would fall into my category of "design flaw", since every sailboater with an outboard leaves their prop out of the water when sailing (to improve speed) and docked (to reduce corrosion). I will check it this weekend to see if I have a puddle in the front of the casing before dropping the motor. Thanks for the lead! Rich

could be normal

Many small outboards seem to leak a little. It often is is an accumulation of unburned oil & carbon from the exhaust that just drips out of the motor after it sits a while. Running the motor at wide open or close to it may burn it off some. Give the engige a good decarb using the manufacturers product like Bombadiers "Engine Tune". A product called Sea Foam also works well. Be sure the lower unit isn't leaking.
