I just took my Nissan 9.8 to the dealer becase I was having problems with keeping it running. I was told that I was the second person this week to have problems with a Nissan engine. He said, "It must be the ethanol in the gas". The outboard starts, but does not keep running and usually stalls. It is a 2005 model. I changed the plugs and fuel filter, but the problem still persists. Anyone else have problems similar problems. Any solution? Thanks, Barry

Barry-I had a related question to gasahol. Here is a link sent by someone that is quite interesting. It explains a lot but doesn't offer a solution to your problem. Up here on the Hudson River, SeaTow is making a fortune towing in power boats with fuel problems!!

is usually only problematic when fuel tanks are made with certain fiberglass resins. Your symtoms sound exactatly like my 5hp Tohatsu the first season I had the boat. The carburator jets and bleeds were very clogged with gummy and rusty deposits. These were caused by un-use and having very stale gasoline evaporating in the carb. bowls. A teardown and cleaning of your carbs should solve your problem.

Tohatsu

Barry, I also have some problems keeping my engine running. It is a Tohatsu, but I believe the same engine. I cleaned carb.,reset the float level, etc, plugs and all; it runs better, but still will stall, especially if allowed to idle, or kept at low thortle. If you keep the RPM up, she does OK. When she quits, it acts as though it was flooded, but it will start back up better, easier, with the choke ON. I think the problem is a weak fuel pump (which is part of the carb.). So far, my problem is livable, but annoying. Keep us posted on what you find. Chaos

Same problem

I have the exact same symptoms with my 5hp Nissan outboard. It always ran and started great but this year it stalls and won't hold an idle. It runs great at wide open throttle. I have been running carb cleaner through with the gas for the past few weeks but it has not helped. I didn't want to go without the motor so I will put up with the inconvenience for now and have the engine serviced over the winter. I expect that the carb is dirty.

I got my boat back from the dealer. The problem found was a stuck thermostat. I will launch the boat again this week and we will see.
