I recently purchased a beneteau 40. it came with a 5 hp Nissan 2 stroke. i have removed the lower unit and replaced the impeller. I cannot reassemble the lower unit. i have the gear shift aligned (i think). The top of the shaft is not engaging with the motor. I am about 2 inches short. I taken the spark plug out and manually moved the cylinder to see if that would get the shaft to align. no luck. Any ideas?

Thanks

It takes me hours to change the impeller in my Nissan 5 - fortunately it lasts for years. The sprocket where the long shaft fits into the engine isn't tapered enough - just keep trying, relax, have a beer and try tomorrow. Hard, but not impossible.

Make sure the bottom of the shaft is seated and then rotate the prop a little to get the top to slide in.. ya might be missing the hole at the engine end entirely.. try laying on side and putting a string under the shaft so you can pull it up a bit .. then remove the string before going completely together.. My old Honda 7.5 required that tactic.

Keep playing with it. I did the impeller on my Nissan 5hp 4 stroke 3 times this spring! It's a problem getting the drive shaft to fit into the hole in the powerhead, and there is nothing you can do to see it. And not much feel between not in and IN! They probably don't make the powerhead hole beveled such that it would guide the drive shaft into place. Daggum engineers!

I hadda do it 3 times: 1st time, I forgot to put the elbow tubing in place. Must have pump housing apart to fit the tubing in. 2nd time, the ss impeller insert rotated in the pump housing. So that's why they had a spot of gasket compound holding the ss insert into the pump housing! 3rd time I got it all together right, and the dang thing has been squirting just fine all summer :D
