Lake Ontario 300 race in July takes at least 3 night sailing. Done that many times. Pretty cool !

The milky way is gorgeous in the middle of the lake. Just had to watch out for big lakers. They go faster than you think. They can't stop or turn even if they saw you on Radar. Generally they lite up like a Christmas tree.

Another variation; sailing on a moonless night. Have you ever looked up at the sky with a night vision scope away from the lights of land? Unbelievable....

Do it all the time. Totaly agree with kfish, nvg of the sky is AWSOME.
The biggest trouble I get into is the id of ships direction. Yes they are lit up like a christmas tree but where are those nav lights. Well they are not on the bow (like they should be dang it) they are usually on the sides and toward the middle of the superstructure. The superstructure could be mostly at the stern (tanker) so you have to look good and hard to make a positive ID. Once that is done you can make a determination of the risk.

Nothing like it.

Being out on a broad reach coming home from Catalina watching the sun set is truly amazing. We usually motorsail up to Catalina at nite too.
I can remember the first time I did this at nite coming up from Ensenada. Black as snot, cloudy, pretty big swell. As a newbie to the nitetime, it was a little spooky. When the sun finally came up I was pretty happy. As we all know, learning to sail is a lot of small steps. Dont let the dark scare you away!
