I would like to install a nicrovent on my forward hatch. What is the best way to cut the 4 3/4" hole required aside from a 4 3/4" hole saw? Any caveats so as not to damage the hatch?-Doug

The best way is

to use the hole saw.Other options may include making a template and using a router.The last option (may be your only option) is to use a saber saw. If you do it this way, put tape over the hatch (this prevents scratching). IF you have a variable speed unit this help. Cut at a VERY slow speed. If you do not have a variable speed unit the plastic will melt behind the blade. You will just need to make multiple passes and the hole is not very clean. If you can make a little tent inside the boat, you will keep the interior a little neater too.I would purchase the hole saw and rent it out for $10 each time someone uses it. I think you can rent one from Nicro, but it is not that much more expensive to purchase one by the time you pay freight.I did mine with the sabre saw, and it was a ROYAL Pain in the Ass!

Hole saw or Dremel

I cut mine with a dremel with a router bit. It left a very neat finish, go slow. Some have said that a hole saw works great, this may be simpler as you don't have to follow a scribed mark.

You can find an inexpensive hole saw @ Harbor freight.Quality may not be the best but, for one hole >>>>>>

Nicro Vent Hole

I just removed the hatch from the boat in order to leave the dust at home! Not having a giant hole saw, I just masked the area (as Steve has already suggested!), drilled a starter hole and cut around approximately 1/8" smaller with my sabre saw and a SHARP blade. Afterwards, I cleaned it up to the line with a 3" sanding drum. My hatch is fibreglass with balsa core - the 'glass dulls the saw blade rather quickly, and the dull blade makes things hot in a hurry, so you may need an extra one.
