solar vent

I've had one for 4 years and have never had rain get in. The boat is in the water 24/7 all year. They come with a plug in if you want to remove the vent, they just pull off, and the only time I remove the vent and use the plug is when I power wash the coach roof.

Nicro Parts or Repair

This is sort of of topic, but close. My Nicro solar vent stopped working. Nicro doesn't offer any parts. Has anyone ever repaired one of these?

Mine quit after 3 years. I simply removed the rechargeable battery and replaced it with a similar one from International batteries. It was easy and not very expensive. I then called the folks at Nicro and asked to buy a new rubber gasket or the hatch plate seal. They sent me new seals for both the hatch plate and battery compartment FREE. Needless to say I'm a Nicro fan-- no pun intended.

Try Battery

Mine has a shut off switch and I don't know why I shut it off but when I flipped back on it would not work so I checked battery with I think a normal C battery and a spin by hand and it started again and replaced the rechargeable battery back in and has been OK. I did spray some silicon spray when all done maybe should be done once in a while. Nick

Big disappointment

My vents are on top of molded in dorade boxes on the cabin top. The boxes are only 7" wide at their widest point. The holes for the vents are 4-3/4". All of these vents are 8" or larger round or square. That would make them overhang the boxes by an inch, more or less, on each side. A perfect place to snag a genny or spinnaker sheet. Aren't there any of these things made a little smaller? It kinda looks like I'll have to stay with the plain old cowl vents. -Smitty

Smitty, can you put a thin SS rod over

the vent or maybe a piece of pipe with the end flattened, and screw it to the vent skirt and the glass below so the sheet will not snag? This is pretty common procedure for solid fuel stove vents.

Nicro without battery

I don't think mine has a battery. It's a rather old unit. I think I'll see if I can get a new motor from Radioshack or online. I don't think that photovoltaic cells ever really die, do they?

Soalr cells

Actually solar cells do have a finite life. But I believe it is in the 15 to 20 year range. The Crystalline cells have a longer life than the thin film type. The rechargeable battery most of these have has a much shorter life. 5 years would be considered very good.
